Almost always, 24 tributes in total participate in a battle royale to the death in each of the Hunger Games.

What are Tributes?

Children from the districts who take part in the Hunger Games are called tributes.

Every year, 24 children between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen for the Hunger Games. Each district is mandated to provide one female and one male tribute for the annual Hunger Games. However, this rule may vary on special occasions. The 50th Hunger Games or The Second Quarter Quell, for instance, mandated each district to send twice the number of tributes as usual, thus bringing the total tribute count to 48.

Tributes are meant to fight to the death in the arena of the Hunger Games where the winner will be crowned as the Victor.

How Tributes are Chosen

Children between the age of 12 and 18 are eligible to take part in the Hunger Games. Once a child reaches 12 years of age, their name is entered into the Games once. The entries are cumulative which means that once the child becomes 13, their name is entered twice, and so on. Children can also opt for tesserae, which is a year’s supply of grain and oil. In exchange for tesserae, their names are entered into the Hunger Games an additional time for every tessera claimed.

The entries of all eligible children are divided into two glass balls as per gender before the reaping. On the day of the reaping, an escort chooses a name from each of the balls at random to determine the tributes from each district. The only exception to this procedure was the First Quarter Quell when the people in the districts were mandated to vote for tributes.

Once a tribute has been chosen, any other eligible child from the same gender can volunteer to take their place. Volunteering is common in Career Districts where children train all their lives for The Hunger Games and where the Hunger Games are seen as an opportunity for fame and wealth.

Preparation before The Hunger Games

As a rule, children are forbidden from training for the Hunger Games before they are chosen as tributes. However, this rule is not strictly enforced, as evidenced by the Career tributes. Before the 75th Hunger Games and after the announcement of the Quarter Quell rules, Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch train themselves physically to increase their chances of winning.

Once someone has been chosen as a tribute, they are provided with a mentor as well as a prep team to help them prepare for the Hunger Games. The mentor provides them with the most useful knowledge and skills necessary to survive in the Hunger Games. They also coach them on the best strategies and methods to win. The prep team, on the other hand, works on the physical appearance of the tributes to make them more presentable for Television.

What do Tributes Get for Winning the Hunger Games?

Tributes who win the Hunger Games are called Victors. Victors receive a lifetime income from the Capitol. They, along with their families, are allowed to live in the wealthiest part of their district called the Victors’ Village

Here, Peeta and Katniss talk longingly of winning the 74th Hunger Games and living in the Victor’s Village with their mentor, Haymitch:

Ah, that’ll be nice,” says Peeta, tightening his arms around me.”You and me and Haymitch. Very cozy. Picnics, birthdays. long winters around the campfire retelling old Hunger Games tales.”

“I told you he hates me!” I say, but I can’t help laughing at the image of Haymitch becoming my new pal.
