Flavius

Despite his vanity and superficial nature, Flavius develops an emotional bond with Katniss and Peeta. He feels sorrowful witnessing their return to the arena during the Third Quarter Quell. Unfortunately, Flavius, Venia, and Octavia are captured by the rebels and taken to District 13 during the Second Rebellion.

Personality and Physical Description

Flavius is a Capitol resident who remains oblivious to the plight of the districts. Much like many Capitol residents, as well as the other members of the prep team, he is entirely self-centered. He has an affected Capitol accent and a deep-rooted lack of awareness, because of which he fails to grasp the harsh reality of the Hunger Games. Alongside Venia and Octavia, Flavius prioritizes vanity over everything else. He does not understand the irony of his opulent life contrasting with the starvation faced by the district residents.

While Katniss finds her prep team’s preoccupation with appearance and superficial conversations off-putting, she also observes a childlike innocence in their behavior, as if they are unaware of a different way of life.

Despite his evident imperfections, Flavius possesses a kind-hearted nature. He is extremely respectful of Katniss’ mother and genuinely nice to her when she shows the prep team how to do Katniss’ hair. Flavius usually wears purple lipstick and bright clothes. His hair is orange and curly like a corkscrew.

“You’re doing very well,” says some guy named Flavius. He gives his orange corkscrew locks a shake and applies a fresh coat of purple lipstick to his mouth. “If there’s one thing we can’t stand, it’s a whiner. Grease her down!”

‘The Hunger Games’

Flavius, along with Venia and Octavia, is a member of Katniss’ prep team. He is the only male member of the team. The primary responsibility of the prep team is working at the Remake Center, where they get Katniss ready for stage appearances and public events, such as the chariot ride and the interview.

This involves various tasks such as cleansing her, waxing her body, washing her hair, and tidying her nails. Flavius and the rest of the prep team also enhanced her skin’s glow and ensured her hair looked lively. This is crucial in portraying Katniss as well-nourished and content in District 12. It also allows Cinna, Katniss’ stylist, to style her according to the occasion. Thus, the prep teams of Katniss and Peeta are extremely important in appealing to sponsors.

During his job, Flavius engages in superficial chitchat, sharing his gratitude for Katniss not being a whiner, and giving Katniss tips on how to maintain her appearance. Although Katniss does not find this impressive, she acknowledges that Flavius can be helpful and kind at times.

Even after Katniss wins the Games and emerges as the victor, Flavius continues to assist her with public appearances. This includes preparing her for the post-Games interview and helping her get ready for various engagements throughout Panem during the Victory Tour.

Flavius in the 75th Hunger Games

In ‘Catching Fire,’ Flavius, Venia, and Octavia assist Katniss in preparing for her wedding dress shoot in Katniss’ new home in the Victors’ Village. During this time, Flavius and the others inform Katniss of the shortage of seafood, electronic gadgets, and fabric. This allows Katniss to conclude that several districts in the nation are rebelling against the Capitol.

They are later assigned to be Katniss Everdeen’s prep team once again for the 75th Hunger Games. This time, Flavius is deeply troubled to witness his beloved tribute returning to the deadly arena. His fondness for Katniss hinders his ability to carry out his tasks effectively, as the idea of Katniss facing imminent death greatly disturbs him.

As the moment approaches for Katniss to enter the arena, both Flavius and Octavia are overwhelmed with sorrow, and their emotional distress becomes too much to bear, leading them to resign from their duties.

“It’s nearly lunch when I feel something dripping on my shoulder and turn to find Flavius, who’s snipping away at my hair with silent tears running down his face. Venia gives him a look, and he gently sets the scissors on the table and leaves.”

‘Catching Fire’ 

Flavius in District 13

After Katniss escapes the arena, Flavius, Venia, and Octavia are apprehended and taken to District 13 from the Capitol. Cinna hoped for the prep team to assist Katniss during the Second Rebellion. Unfortunately, the rebels treat them with cruelty. They are locked in a room (Compartment 3908) and severely punished for stealing a piece of bread, ending up half-naked and shackled to a wall. They are likely subjected to beatings as well.

“Flavius’s foot catches on a metal grate over a circular opening in the floor, and my stomach contracts when I think of why a room would need a drain. The stains of human misery that must have been hosed off these white tiles…”

‘Mockingjay’

Katniss and Gale discover Katniss’ prep team in a repugnant room reeking of filth, urine, and infection. Katniss immediately has them released from their punishment. Mrs Everdeen provides them with medical attention. Later, after her prep team is integrated into the District 13 regimen, Katniss notices that Flavius appears washed out without his signature purple lipstick and bright clothes. 

Although remaining highly fearful of the people in District 13, Flavius assists Katniss in preparing for various propos filmed and dresses her in the Mockingjay uniform designed by Cinna. He also works on Katniss’ appearance on the day of President Snow’s execution. Flavius, Venia, and Octavia are the only prep team to survive the Second Rebellion.
