Katniss Everdeen in ‘Catching Fire’

Finnick is an extremely attractive young man. He is tall with an athletic body built from being on the sea and fishing every day. His skin is golden in color from being tanned under the sun, and his hair is bronze-colored. Finnick’s most striking feature is his eyes, which are a beautiful sea-green color.

Finnick is highly sensual, always using his natural beauty to his advantage. Katniss admits that he is one of the most stunning people to ever exist on Earth.

Personality

Finnick is highly skilled as a Career Tribute and, therefore, extremely confident in his abilities. He is friendly with everyone and talks to people with an easy attitude. He is capable of building deep connections with the people he loves while maintaining a facade of civility with everyone else.

Finnick is extremely loving towards his partner, Annie, and is willing to go to great lengths for her despite Annie being driven insane from her traumatic experiences in the arena.

Finnick is strong, brave, and fierce, making him an excellent soldier in the Second Rebellion. However, due to his traumatic experiences, he begins to experience frequent mental breakdowns in District 13.

Finnick has a good sense of humor. His easygoing nature allows him to amuse himself and those around him by acting silly and cracking jokes. He is kind, caring, and gentle towards his friends, offering Katniss several words of comfort during her stressful times.

Finnick in the 65th Hunger Games

Finnick Odair was chosen as the male tribute from District 4 in the 65th Hunger Games. He was only 14 years old at the time. He was mentored by Mags Flanagan. Coming from a Career District, Finnick was already in with a good chance of winning. Further, his extraordinary beauty gave him an enormous advantage in the arena. Most of the sponsors from the Capitol decided to favor him over the other tributes. Therefore, Finnick did not lack anything in the arena, while other reviews struggled to get a mere handful of grain or some matches to light a fire.

Victory was guaranteed when Finnick was given a trident, which Katniss speculates to be the most expensive gift she has ever seen anyone get in the games. As Finnick came from the fishing district, using the trident as a weapon was second nature. After about a week, when the remaining tributes decided to target Finnick, Finnick used his knowledge of the sea to wipe them out. Weaving a net out of vines, he trapped the remaining tribute and speared them with the trident.

The combination of his extraordinary physical skill and Finnick’s success in the Games made him a living legend in the nation of Panem. After becoming a Victor, Finnick worked as a mentor to future tributes in the Hunger Games. As such, he mentored his future lover, Annie Cresta (who won the 70th Hunger Games), as well as the tributes who took part in the 74th Hunger Games.

Victors who were physically desirable were also prostituted to wealthy Capitol citizens. Finnick shares that he was one of these victors in a propo. President Snow sold his body to bidders in the Capitol. Although this was highly traumatizing to the young boy, Finnick used this opportunity to learn about various Capitol officials and their dirty secrets.

“I don’t like jewels, and I have more money than I need. What do you spend all yours on, anyway, Finnick?” I say.

“Oh, I haven’t dealt in anything as common as money for years,” says Finnick.

“Then how do they pay you for the pleasure of your company?” I ask.

“With secrets,” he says softly.

Finnick in the Third Quarter Quell

Reaping, Training, and Interview

Finnick is chosen as the male tribute from District 4 in the 75th Hunger Games. His mentor, Mags Flanagan, volunteers to take Annie Cresta’s place as the female tribute.

During the Tribute Parade at the opening ceremonies (before the beginning of the Third Quarter Quell), Finnick is a familiar face to Katniss amongst all the newcomers. He is dressed by his stylist in a golden fish net that is tied around his crotch, making him practically naked. He looks extremely attractive on the chariots, making him a favorite among the sponsors to win the Games.

At the training center, Finnick helps Katniss with a difficult knot that she has been struggling with. As he is extremely capable with nets and knots, Finnick finds the knot-tying station extremely easy. He introduces Katniss to his district partner, Mags. Katniss immediately likes Mags and wishes to ally with her, instead of Finnick. Finnick gives Katniss an hour of trident lessons in exchange for an hour of archery lessons.

During the pre-Games interview with Caesar Flickerman, Finnick recites a poem to Annie Cresta, his one true love. His numerous lovers at the Capitol mistake the poem to be about themselves and nearly faint upon hearing it.

Finnick in the Arena

In the lush tropical island arena, Finnick survives the Initial Cornucopia Bloodbath at the beginning of the 3rd Quarter Quell. He is the second tribute to swim from his pedestal and reach the Cornucopia, from which he retrieves a trident and a net.

He approaches Katniss to form an alliance. Skeptical at first, Katniss becomes convinced when she notices the bracelet he wears, once belonging to Haymitch. Katniss realizes that this is Haymitch’s nonverbal way of asking her to trust the male Victor. Finnick comes to Peeta’s defense and offers to carry him to shore from the platform, as Peeta does not know how to swim. Thus, District 12 and District 4 form an alliance.

The group, comprising Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, and his fellow tribute and previous District 4 Victor, Mags, embarks on a journey through the dense jungle together. Along the way, they encounter the forcefield, which Peeta walks into. Peeta is unexpectedly thrown back by the force field and his heart stops beating. Thanks to Finnick’s quick actions, he manages to revive Peeta through mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (CPR).

The group soon becomes dehydrated and is desperate to find a source of water. Finnick and Mags weave a net out of long, sharp grass while Katniss looks for water. The alliance is blessed with a gift from the sponsors, which Peeta claims. The gift is a spile that helps them retrieve water from the sap of the tree trunks. Having finally quenched their thirst, the group goes to sleep while Finnick takes the first watch. The weather seems like the beginning of a thunderstorm and Finnick finally falls into a restless sleep as Katniss takes over guard duty.

The Fog, the Monkey Mutts, and the Jabberjays

The group soon encounters a perilous, poisonous fog. Sadly, Mags succumbs to the fog’s deadly effects, and Finnick demonstrates his reliability by carrying Peeta away from the fog. Finnick, Katniss, and Peeta are attacked by dangerous monkey muttations, who Finnick fends off with his trident. Katniss and Peeta defend themselves from the vicious attack of the monkey mutts, and the three of them manage to escape to the beach.

After reaching the beach, Finnick and the group are interrupted by the arrival of Johanna Mason, Wiress, and Beetee. The arena’s true nature becomes clear as the group deciphers its clock-like setup, with each hour bringing new horrors. During this time, Wiress’s throat is slit by Gloss, while Finnick saves Peeta’s life yet again in the midst of a fight. He receives a knife in the thigh from Enobaria as a result.

Later, Katniss and Finnick go in search of water when they are subjected to an attack by jabberjays. The jabberjays mimic Annie Cresta’s voice, screaming out for Finnick in a highly tortured voice. Finnick immediately calls out Annie’s name in a frenzy. Although Katniss kills the jabberjay, Finnick is extremely unnerved by the jabberjay attack and Annie’s screams.

The following day, Beetee devises a plan to eliminate the other tributes by setting up a deadly trap at the beach, utilizing a highly conductive wire, and lightning strikes from a nearby tree. Katniss and Johanna set out to execute this plan, but they encounter Enobaria along the way. Johanna makes a large cut on Katniss’ hand to remove Katniss’ tracker device. Finnick helps to chase Enobaria away while Katniss blows up the arena.

Finnick is rescued along with Katniss, Johanna, and Beetee, and brought to District 13 in a hovercraft.

Finnick in the Second Rebellion

Finnick is extremely unhinged and highly distressed at the beginning of ‘Mockingjay.’ All he can think about is his lover, Annie, who is being tortured at the Capitol at his expense. However, Katniss manages to provide him with some relief by telling her about her Mockingjay deal. The deal is that she agrees to become the Mockingjay in return for the victors, including Annie, being rescued from the Capitol.

Finnick and Katniss spend a lot of time together, providing some much-needed comfort and kindness towards each other. They hunt together, film propos and have dinner together.

At dinner, Finnick brings his tray to my bed so we can watch the newest propo together on television. He was assigned quarters on my old floor, but he has so many mental relapses, he still basically lives in the hospital.

‘Catching Fire’

The rescue team is sent out on a special order to rescue the captured Victors and bring them under the refuge of District 13. The rescue party is successful and Finnick is reunited with Annie. During the rescue mission, Finnick films a live broadcast to distract the Capitol. This is when Finnick’s story about his prostitution to the Capitol’s people comes to light. Here, he spills the secrets of how President Snow climbed to the top by poisoning his enemies.

“And now, on to our good President Coriolanus Snow,” says Finnick. “Such a young man when he rose to power. Such a clever one to keep it. How, you must ask yourself, did he do it? One word. That’s all you really need to know. Poison.”

Finnick is deliriously happy to be reunited with Annie once again. He helps her get medical attention for her torture wounds. The two of them get married in District 13. Katniss lends Annie her wedding dress, while Finnick wears Peeta’s pants and suit. Soon, Annie becomes pregnant.

Finnick’s Death

Finnick is assigned to Squad 451 along with Katniss. During his squad’s mission to infiltrate President Snow’s mansion, Finnick helps Peeta gain a sense of reality by asking him to check with the others whether his memories are real or not. Later, the squad encounters a group of lizard muttations in the underground sewers. While Katniss manages to escape above ground by climbing the ladder, Finnick is caught in the tunnel amongst the deadly lizard mutts. Unfortunately, the lizard mutts are no match for Finnick, and as Katniss shines down her flashlight, she discovers, to her horror, that the mutts have begun tearing him apart.

Wishing to provide Finnick with a peaceful death, Katniss causes the Holo to self-destruct by saying “nightlock” 3 times. She drops the Holo underground, and it explodes, destroying the lizard mutts and killing Finnick.

Annie Cresta later gives birth to Finnick’s son and sends Katniss a picture of him for her memory book.
