Industry of District 7

‘The Hunger Games: Tribute Guide‘ describes District 7 as:

This beautiful district is lush with trees, from which these citizens supply our lumber and paper. The people of District 7 are hardworking and down-to-earth.

District 7 is responsible for the production of lumber and paper for the Capitol. Almost all residents are involved in this trade, including young children who are taught to harvest lumber from trees at an early age. Young children are taught the trade from an early age as well.

Relationship with the Games

During the Hunger Games, tributes from District 7 have been dressed as trees for more than 40 years, as Johanna Mason notes during the Third Quarter Quell.

Tributes from District 7 have a distinct advantage in the Hunger Games. This is because rather than being forced to attend school like the District 12 children, the children of District 7 work in the lumber fields from a young age. Thus, the physical labor that they exert in the district industry makes them stronger than the other tributes. Further, they are experts in the use of axes, which prove to be lethal weapons in the arena.

Johanna’s as happy as I’ve seen her in the arena. While I’m adding to my stock of arrows, she pokes around until she comes up with a pair of lethal-looking axes. It seems an odd choice until I see her throw one with such force it sticks in the sunsoftened gold of the Cornucopia. Of course. Johanna Mason. District 7. Lumber. I bet she’s been tossing around axes since she could toddle.

History: District 7 in the Rebellion

Not much is known about the involvement of District 7 in the “Dark Days” or the First Rebellion. The siege of District 7 by the rebels might have resulted in a shortage of wood and paper in the Capitol.

After the 74th Hunger Games, District 7 is rumored to have rebelled against the Capitol in a small uprising. During the 75th Hunger Games, District 7 is involved in the underground rebel network, whose mission is to protect Katniss Everdeen and break her out of the arena. District 7 takes an active part in the Second Rebellion. The damages caused in the district due to the rebellion include a broken hydroelectric dam, as shown by Peeta Mellark during one of his interviews.

All of the victors from District 7 with the exception of Johanna Mason are killed in the Victors’ Purge and the war.

In the film, there is a scene involving District 7 loggers who are being escorted to their work by Peacekeepers. One of the workers hums Rue’s four-note tune, which acts as a signal to the other workers to immediately run and scale nearby trees. Many of them are shot by the Peacekeepers. However, the remaining loggers set off landmines in the ground below, wiping out the Peacekeepers.
