Personality and Physical Description
Darius is an easygoing Peacekeeper. He is one of the few Peacekeepers who get along with the residents of District 12. He never let the power of being a Peacekeeper go to his head. Instead, he makes life easier for the residents he is friendly with, including Katniss and Gale. Darius is righteous and brave. He probably dislikes violence as he steps in when Gale is being whipped by Thread at the cost of great danger to himself.
Darius is described as youthful, possessing unkempt red hair and a boyish charm. Although he is in his early 20s, he looks as young as Katniss.
Early life
Darius was probably born in the Capitol. One can come to this conclusion based on his name. Usually, people with Greek/Roman names are from the Capitol. Darius becomes a Peacekeeper at an early age and is stationed in District 12. The reason for this is unknown.
Darius in District 12
A Peacekeeper named Darius comes up and buys a bowl while I’m eating. As law enforcers go, he’s one of my favorites. Never really throwing his weight around, usually good for a joke. He’s probably in his twenties, but he doesn’t seem much older than I do. Something about his smile, his red hair that sticks out every which way, gives him a boyish quality.
Katniss Everdeen about Darius in ‘Catching Fire’
Katniss was friendly with Darius and sometimes ate soup with him at Greasy Sae’s at the Hob. Katniss’ hunting partner and best friend, Gale Hawthorne, tells her that Darius likes her and often flirts with her. He recalls the time when Darius jokingly asks Katniss to buy one of his kisses. As Gale mentions Darius flirting with Katniss during New Year’s Eve, he realizes that he himself harbors romantic feelings for Katniss.
In ‘Catching Fire,’ Darius steps up when Gale is nearly being whipped to death by the Head Peacekeeper, Romulus Thread, for illegal poaching of a wild turkey. After about 20 lashings, Darius tries to stop Thread. However, Thread mercilessly knocks Darius unconscious.
Darius in The Capitol
Darius is taken to the Capitol to receive punishment for intervening with Gale’s whipping. No one knows what happens to him until Katniss goes to the Capitol herself as a tribute in the Third Quarter Quell. This is when she discovers that Darius has been turned into an Avox. Avoxes are traitors to the Capitol who have their tongues cut off. They are forced to wait upon the people of the Capitol as their servants. As an Avox, Darius is forced to wait upon the District 12 tributes, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, along with Lavinia, the Avox girl. Katniss concludes that President Snow deliberately placed Darius in her quarters to mess with her head.
Darius’ Death
In ‘Mockingjay’, Darius is captured and tortured in the cell next to Peeta’s. As such, Peter was able to hear every single thing that went on in Darius’ cell. He reckons that Darius was only tortured to psychologically traumatize Peeta, as Darius was unable to provide any information about the rebels anyway. Not only was Darius unaware of rebel activities, but he was also an Avox. This meant that he was not able to answer when questions were posed to him. All Darius could do was grant and create animal sounds. Eventually, the Capitol cut Darius’ limbs off one by one and beat him to death.
