‘A Game of Thrones’ eloquently uses its characters to propel its plot forward. With many characters, the story enjoys depth to an unmatched level as each character interacts with the story, giving fluidity and realism to the consequences of the decisions made by the characters’ actions.

Eddard Stark
Eddard Stark, Ned, is the Lord of Winterfell, the northern kingdom of Westeros. He is a man who believes that honor, justice, and dedication to family are crucial things everyone needs to have. As a sworn friend to the King, Robert Baratheon, Ned tries to do everything to ensure that the king’s reign is smooth and without problems. When Robert asks him to become the Hand of the King after Jon Arryn’s death, he rejects the offer but later accepts it.
On reaching King’s Landing, Ned decides to investigate Jon Arryn’s death; this leads him to uncover Cersei’s secret. With Robert out on a hunting trip, Ned acts honorably and tells Cersei to leave. However, she pulls the strings of her power and ensures that Robert does not hear of her infidelity.
When Ned realizes that his friend, Robert, got injured on his hunting trip, he realizes that danger is ahead and tries to avert crises by becoming the interim ruler. However, he gets betrayed by Petyr, a member of the small council, and he gets arrested. Ned gets deceived into admitting treason for the sake of his daughters, and the new King, Joffrey, sentences him to death.
Bran Stark
Bran Stark is the second to the last child of Eddard Stark. His charismatic nature and empathy make him likable. As a boy of seven, he witnesses the beheading of a deserter of the Night’s Watch and begs his father to keep the pup of a dead direwolf. When his father accepts to become the Hand of the King, Bran gets excited because he will follow his father to King’s Landing.
Bran’s bravery and love for adventure made him love climbing the walls of Winterfell, but one day, he comes across Cersei and her brother, Jaime. Realizing that he is a problem, Jaime throws him off the roof, making him become unconscious and permanently paralyzed. While unconscious, an assassin tries to kill him, but he gets saved by his direwolf.
He later dreams of a three-eyed raven who tells him to fly and see all of Westeros. Bran wakes up and realizes he will never walk again. Later on, Bran gets a gift from Tyrion, enabling him to ride a horse, and when his brother decides to go to war, he leaves him to become the lord of Winterfell.
Jon Snow
Jon Snow is the bastard son of Eddard Stark. With no knowledge of who his mother was, Jon tries to fit in among the Stark, but he realizes the wall between him and his half-siblings will remain forever. Though he is a bastard, Jon shows his unrelenting affection towards his siblings Robb, Arya, Bran, and Rickon but could not do the same for Sansa as she only saw him as a half-brother.
When Benjen, Ned’s brother, arrives from the Night’s Watch to partake in the feast for the King, Jon tells him of his willingness to join the Night’s Watch. However, Benjen rejects his request. Later, Catelyn convinces Ned to allow Jon to join the Night’s Watch. On reaching Castle Black, Jon realizes that the watch was not what he had dreamed of and learns that his uncle, Benjen, is missing.
When Jon learns of his uncle, he starts training to become a ranger and look for him, but he discovers that the boys at the castle dislike him. After deciding to make friends with the boys, Jon begins helping them out with training. He meets Samwell Tarly and protects him from getting hurt; this makes Samwell become his best friend.
Jon becomes a man of the Night’s Watch but realizes that the commander of the watch wants him as an apprentice. A discovery beyond the wall leads him to recognize the existence of the White Walkers, dead people who tried hurting others. Later on, he learns of his father’s death. He decides to desert the Night’s Watch, an offense punishable by death, but his friends stop him, and he decides to remain on the wall and protect the realm from evil. He also starts preparing to go beyond the wall to search for Benjen as Lord Mormont tells him of his desire to get Benjen back at all costs.
Daenerys Targaryen
Daenerys Targaryen is the younger sister of Rhaegar and Viserys Targaryen and the youngest child of Aerys II Targaryen and Queen Rhaella. After the rebellion of Robert Baratheon against the Mad King succeeds, all of Rhaegar’s children get killed. A pregnant Rhaella and a young Viserys escape to Dragonstone, where Daenerys is born. Though her brother longs for the Iron Throne, Daenerys admits to herself that the only thing she wanted was to live a good life.
When she reaches the age of 13, she is married off by her brother to Khal Drogo, leader of the Dothraki, in hopes of getting an army to take back Westeros. At her wedding feast, she gets three dragon eggs. Viserys gets impatient as Drogo does not give him an army immediately. As Drogo’s Khaleesi, she learns the ways of the Dothraki, and soon, she gets pregnant with Drogo’s son. An attempt on her life makes Drogo swear the Iron Throne to their child.
Things begin to fall apart for Daenerys after she rescues a maegi woman from being killed. The woman, who presented herself as a wise woman, poisons Drogo’s wound and makes it get infected. In a last attempt to save her husband, Daenerys agrees to the woman using dark magic, but it backfires, and she loses her unborn baby.
With Drogo dead and most of his Khalasar gone, Daenerys decides to burn the maegi with her husband. She also puts the dragon eggs into the flames, and as the woman burns, she steps into the fire. Daenerys comes out unhurt and with three baby dragons.
Viserys Targaryen
Viserys is the last son of Aerys II Targaryen. After Robert Baratheon rebels against the Mad King, Aerys send Viserys and his pregnant mother to dragon stone, where she births Daenerys and dies in the process. When his father falls, Robert Baratheon sends his brother, Stannis, to kill Viserys and his sister, but they get rescued by Ser Willem Darry and his men. From there, Viserys and his sister begin moving from city to city, trying to escape Robert’s hired assassins.
Viserys decides to give his sister out in marriage to Khal Drogo, a Dothraki warlord with thousands of warriors with hopes of using the Dothraki to reclaim the throne. However, his impatience starts making him act out, and when Daenerys tries to help him, his pride makes him hurt her. In Vaes Dothrak, he gets so drunk that he pulls out a sword, an act forbidden in the sacred land of the Dothraki; this costs him his life as Khal Drogo bathes him with molten gold, killing him.
Khal Drogo
Khal Drogo is the leader of one of the largest Dothraki Khalasar. He gets revered by his people as he has never lost a fight. When Viserys gives Daenerys to him, Drogo marries her, and she gets pregnant with his child. A foiled attempt on Daenerys’s life makes him swear the Iron Throne to her. However, after he conquers Khal Ogo, his wound gets infected, and he dies.
Robb Stark
Robb Stark is the first son of Eddard Stark. When his father and mother leave Winterfell, Robb becomes the lord of Winterfell. With maturity and confidence, he governs the kingdom with the help of people like maester Luwin. He soon becomes an excellent tactician. When Tyrion returns to Winterfell, Robb displays his disdain towards him as Catelyn had told him about how she believed the plot on Bran’s life got planned by the queen.
Robb learns that his father got arrested by Cersei Lannister; this makes him gather men whose allegiance is with Ned and march to battle for his father and sisters’ freedom. Before reaching the Lannisters, Robb reunites with his mother and agrees to marry the daughter of Walder Frey. After passing through Frey’s kingdom, he launches a surprise attack on Tywin Lannister.
Robb’s planned attack gives him the upper hand against Jamie Lannister, capturing him. With Jamie captured, Robb and his mother reach Hoster Tully’s kingdom, where a meeting gets convened. After learning of his father’s death, the men swear allegiance to Robb as King in the North.
Arya Stark
Arya is the youngest of the two daughters of Eddard Stark. She is a wild girl who prefers the sword to sewing or acting ladylike. When Ned accepts the offer to become the Hand of the King, he decides to take Arya and her sister, Sansa, to King’s Landing. Even though Arya gets sad about becoming a lady at King’s Landing, she still tries to learn how to use a sword as Jon gifts her a slim blade. When her friend, Mycah, gets killed, Arya blames Sansa and refuses to talk to her sister.
On reaching King’s Landing, her father hands her to Syrio Forel for training, and she learns how to sword dance. She overhears some men talking about killing her father and warns him. When Robert dies, Ned gets arrested, and Arya escapes the Lannister men trying to detain her. She begins living on the streets. Arya secretly attends a summoning by the new King Joffrey and gets shocked to watch her father get sentenced to death. Before she makes a scene, she gets taken away by Yoren, preventing her from watching her father die.
Catelyn Stark
Catelyn is the wife of Eddard Stark, born to Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Trident. As the mother to Ned’s children, except for Jon, Catelyn protests her husband’s acceptance of the title, Hand of the King, but he accepts and prepares to leave for King’s Landing.
Before leaving, Bran has an accident. Catelyn blamed the Lannisters as she had received a letter from her sister stating that her husband death got executed by Cersei. After Ned leaves, an attempt on Bran’s life forces Catelyn to travel to King’s Landing and investigate her son’s planned assassination. In King’s Landing, she meets Petyr, a childhood friend, and learns that Tyrion owned the knife held by the assassin.
Catelyn decides to return to Winterfell. She meets Tyrion and has him detained. She takes him to her sister’s place, but her sister makes Tyrion her prisoner. After Tyrion gets freed, Catelyn returns to meet her son Robb, who she learns has gathered an army. Catelyn meets Walder Frey and agrees to make two of his children her wards. When Ned dies, Robb leads an attack against the Lannisters, successfully capturing Jamie. Catelyn tries to propose peace to get her daughters back. However, her proposition fails, and the men declare Robb the King of the North.
Sansa Stark
Sansa Stark is the oldest daughter of Eddard Stark. She is a naïve girl who loves being classy, the opposite of her sister. Her love for elegance and class made her resent people like Jon Snow. When she hears that her father agreed to the marriage between her and Joffrey, Sansa jubilates for joy. Later, she and Joffrey go on a ride and meet Arya practicing with her friend Mycah. When a fight between them ensues, Sansa watches and cries, unable to do anything. When she gets summoned to recant her side of events, she pretends to know nothing believing that her loyalty will make Joffrey love her more.
In King’s Landing, Ned begins suspecting a plot against him and his daughters; this makes him prepare a ship for their return to Winterfell. On hearing that she will no longer marry Joffrey, Sansa gets sad and meets Queen Cersei. She tells her about her departure, not knowing Cersei’s plot. Later, Ned gets arrested. Sansa plays into Cersei’s plan and writes a letter to her siblings stating she is okay. However, Joffrey takes her to her father’s head.
Joffrey Baratheon
Joffrey is the son of Cersei Lannister and her brother, Jaime. Though he is officially the crown prince of Westeros, his mother hides the truth about his father from him and her husband. Joffrey is spoilt and acts pompously. His love for violence and death makes him deceptive and proud. When Robert dies, his mother plots against Ned and makes Joffrey the king. Against the advice of many, he orders Ned to get beheaded. After killing him, he takes his daughter, Sansa, to see her father’s head.
Tyrion Lannister
Tyrion Lannister is the last son of Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock. As the last-born son of Tywin, he admits that his family, except his brother, Jamie, shows Contempt towards him. He also states that being born a dwarf made his father hate him more because he felt that he was responsible for his wife’s death.
When Robert Baratheon decides to visit Eddard, Tyrion tags along as his sister is the queen. On reaching Winterfell, he decides to go on a trip to the Night’s Watch. After he leaves, an assassin tries to kill Bran, and Catelyn goes to King’s Landing, where she learns that Tyrion won the knife the killer tried using. On her way to Winterfell, she meets Tyrion and has him detained.
Tyrion and Catelyn travel to the Eyrie, where he requests a trial by combat. Tyrion’s champion, Bronn, a sellsword, wins, and he is set free. He meets his father, who had already gathered an army against the Starks. After a surprise attack by the Starks leaves many of Tyrion’s men dead, he discovers that his father knew of an attack. Later, he gets sent back to King’s Landing to put Joffrey under control.
Cersei Lannister
Cersei Lannister is the queen of Westeros and the wife of Robert Baratheon. As the daughter of Tywin Lannister, her drive for power makes her vicious and deadly. As the queen of Westeros, she gets jealous of her husband’s former love, Lyanna, who died before he married her, and with her in love with her brother, Jamie, she prevents Robert from having children with her. When she discovers that Jon Arryn knows her secret, she arrests him. Trying to cover her tracks, Cersei plots Ned Stark’s arrest and puts her son on the Iron Throne after she plans the death of her husband.
Tywin Lannister
Tywin Lannister is the Lord of Casterly Rock, the western kingdom of Westeros. With his kingdom being the second richest in Westeros, Westeros gets indebted to him. His power is almost unrivaled in Westeros as he controls the cash flowing to King’s Landing. As a man who believes in protecting his family name at all cost, he gathers his army and marches against the Starks when Catelyn detains his son, Tyrion. Tywin‘s pride makes him underestimate Robb Stark; this leads to a victory against his first son, Jamie’s army.
Jamie Lannister
Jamie Lannister is the first son of Tywin Lannister and a knight of the king’s guard. As a young knight of 17, he betrayed his first king, Aerys II Targaryen, and got the name Kingslayer. Jamie’s love for his brother, Tyrion, makes him attack and kill Ned’s men. His sexual relationship with his sister, Cersei, makes him father her children, including Joffrey, and when Ned learns the truth, Cersei has him killed.
As Tywin’s first son, Jamie receives the most love from his father as he is the heir to the throne of Casterly Rock, and even when Robert Baratheon makes him Warden of the West, he still fights for his father’s army. In a battle with Robb Stark, Jamie gets defeated and captured.
Robert Baratheon
Robert Baratheon was the King of Westeros before his death. He is a man of stature, and as a fierce warrior, he led a rebellion against Aerys II Targaryen after the woman he loved, Lyanna, got kidnapped by Rhaegar Targaryen, the crowned prince.
When he becomes the King of Westeros, Robert admits to Ned that he hates the throne. His hatred for the Targaryens makes him place a bounty on Daenerys and her brother, and when Ned disagrees with his plan to kill Daenerys, he makes him step down as Hand of the King. Later, an accident with a wild animal kills him.
Samwell Tarly of Horn
Samwell Tarly is of the House of Tarly, bannermen to Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden, Warden of the South. Though he comes from wealth, his father decides to disown him because of his appearance and behavior. As a young boy, Samwell’s cowardice and hatred for violence turn him into a laughing stock and disgrace.
Realizing that he will never change, Samwell’s father gets another woman pregnant, and when she gives birth to a boy, Samwell’s father asks him to choose between dying or the Night’s Watch. Samwell chooses the latter and comes to the watch. However, his unsuitability to become a fighter makes Jon asks maester Aemon to take him in as an apprentice. When Jon tries to desert the Night’s Watch to help his brother, Samwell gathers his friends, and together, they prevent him from becoming a deserter.
Theon Greyjoy
Theon Greyjoy is the son of Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands. To foster peace, Theon becomes a ward under Eddard Stark. Though he loves adventure and has a dark sense of humor, he is loyal and a great archer. When Bran gets put at knifepoint, Theon rescues him by shooting an arrow with stunning precision. Later, Theon joins the Starks army and fights for Robb Stark.
Jorah Mormont
Jorah Mormont is the son of Lord Mormont, commander of the Night’s Watch and Lord of Castle Black. As the Lord of Bear Islands, a poor and cold land, Jorah tries to sell some poachers to a Tyroshi slaver and dishonors the Starks. His actions cause him to flee to Pentos, where he meets Daenerys and becomes her guard. He protects her when Drogo’s bloodriders try to harm her.
Lord Petyr Baelish
Lord Petyr Baelish is the Master of Coin of Westeros. As a member of the small council, Petyr uses deception to make others believe he is harmless. As a young boy, Petyr loved Catelyn, and when he heard she was to get married to Ned’s brother, Brandon, he challenged him to a duel but lost.
When Catelyn reaches King’s Landing seeking answers about the attempted assassination of her son, Petyr tells her the knife belongs to him, but he lost it to Tyrion. Ned reaches King’s Landing and begins investigating Jon Arryn’s death. Petyr advises him to trust no one, and when Robert orders the death of Daenerys, Petyr advises against the faceless men to save her. He later betrays Ned, leading to his arrest.
Lord Varys
Lord Varys is the King of Whisperers and a member of the small council. He is a eunuch with a bald head. When Ned begins investigating Jon Arryn’s death, Varys tells him about the poison used to kill Jon. He also advises Ned to admit to treason to save his daughters from getting killed.
Gared
Gared is a man of the Night’s Watch who goes out on a scout with Ser William Waymar Royce and Will. When Royce gets killed by the White Walkers, Gared deserts the Night’s Watch. He later gets killed by Ned as the law required.
Jory Cassel
Jory Cassel was the Captain of Guard for the Starks and was loyal to Ned. He follows Ned to King’s Landing to protect him as Hand of the King. When Ned steps down, Jamie waylays him on the road and orders his men to kill everyone except Ned. Jory gets killed in the fight by Jaime Lannister.
Hullen
Hullen is the Master of Horse for the Starks. When Ned accepts the offer to become the Hand of the King, Hullen follows him to King’s Landing. When Ned gets arrested, Hullen gets killed.
Magister Illyrio Mopatis
Illyrio Mopatis is the Magister of the free city of Pentos, beyond Westeros. As the Magister, Mopatis accepts Viserys and Daenerys into his place and arranges the marriage between Daenerys and Khal Drogo. He also gifts Daenerys three dragon eggs and three maids.
Rickon Stark
Rickon Stark is the last child of Eddard and Catelyn Stark. As a boy of only three, he watches as his father, mother, sisters, and brothers leave Winterfell. He gets sad that his family left and gets combative with his wolf, Shaggydog.
Qotho, Haggo, and Cohollo
Qotho, Haggo, and Cohollo are the three bloodriders of Khal Drogo. According to the Dothraki, the Khal’s bloodriders are his sworn brothers who follow him even in death. Their duty lies with the Khal. They defend him from foes or avenge him if he gets killed.
When Cohollo tries to kill the maegi witch, Daenerys orders him to stop, but he does not. Then an arrow from Aggo pierces through him, killing him. Qotho gets killed by Jorah Mormont, and Rakharo kills Haggo.
Septa Mordane
Septa Mordane is a woman that helped the daughter of Eddard Stark prepare for their journey into ladyhood. She is a mother figure to Sansa and Arya. She also tutors the girls of Ned’s men. When Ned goes to King’s Landing, Septa follows to help out with the girls. After Ned gets killed, Septa Mordane is beheaded.
Ser Rodrik Cassel
Rodrik Cassel is the master at arms for the Starks and Jory Cassel’s uncle. He trains Eddard Stark’s boys Jon and Robb. When Ned leaves for King’s Landing, Rodrik stays behind to help Robb and Catelyn in Winterfell. He continues training soldiers for the Starks.
Sandor Clegane
Sandor Clegane, also called the Hound, is the personal bodyguard of Joffrey Baratheon. He kills Mycah, Arya’s friend, and when Ned gets arrested and killed, Sandor gets promoted to a soldier of the king’s guard. Sandor has a distinct appearance as he has a burnt face with only wisps of hair. His face got burnt by his older brother, Gregor Clegane, also called the Mountain.
Yoren
Yoren is a man of the Night’s Watch. When Jon reaches Castle Black, Yoren tells him how his attitude made the other boys hate him; this led to Jon changing. Later, Yoren travels to King’s Landing, and after Ned gets arrested, he saves Arya and prevents her from watching her father get beheaded.
Mycah
Mycah was a 13-year-old boy and the son of a butcher in Winterfell. Mycah and Arya meet Joffrey and Sansa, a fight breaks out, and Joffrey gets injured. Though Mycah is innocent, he flees and later gets captured and killed by Sandor Clegane.
Hodor
Hodor is a giant who lives in Winterfell, His real name is Walter, but he gets called Hodor because it is the only word he speaks. He helps the Starks do many chores, and when Bran gets paralyzed, he carries Bran around. Hodor fears going into the tombs of the lords of Winterfell.
Captain Moreo Turnitis
Captain Moreo Turnitis is the captain of the ship Catelyn uses to get to King’s Landing. He tries making her pay him on behalf of his men, but she refuses as she tells him every man deserves his pay, even if he uses it for irrelevant things.
Grenn
Grenn is a boy that joins the Night’s Watch around the same time as Jon Snow. Initially disliking Jon, he tries to band with other boys to bully him, but when Jon overpowers him, he gets angry. Later, he becomes friends with Jon and prevents him from deserting.
Jon Arryn
Jon Arryn was the former Hand of the King and Lord of the Eyrie. Jon discovered that Cersei had Jaime’s children, but he died before he could reveal the truth.
Allysa Arryn
Allysa is the wife of Jon Arryn and Catelyn’s sister. When her husband dies, she flees to Eyrie and takes her son with her. Believing that Cersei was behind her husband’s death, she sends a message to Catelyn warning her of the Lannisters.
Lord Renly Baratheon
Lord Renly Baratheon was the youngest brother of Robert Baratheon. When Robert became King, Renly became Lord Paramount of the Stormlands. When Robert dies, Renly gathers support from some noble houses and claims the throne.
Maester Pycelle
Pycelle is the grand maester of Westeros and a man of vast knowledge. He sits on the small council and shows loyalty to Queen Cersei. When Ned investigates Jon’s death, Pycelle lies, telling him that Jon died of natural causes.
Maester Luwin
Maester Luwin is the maester of Winterfell. When Eddard left for King’s Landing, maester Luwin became one of the advisers to Catelyn and Robb. He later tells Bran the story of the First Men and Children of the Forest.
Lord Mormont
Lord Mormont is the commander of the Night’s Watch. As Lord of Castle Black, he begs Tyrion to make Robert send more men as the Night’s Watch is a dwindling force. He makes Jon his apprentice and gives him a sword passed down throughout his generation. The blade was called Longclaw.
Maester Aemon
Maester Aemon was the brother of Aegon Targaryen. He was older than Aegon, but after becoming blind, he trained to become a maester and later joined the Night’s Watch. Aemon tells Jon how his family was slaughtered and took in Samwell after Jon begs him to.
Syrio Forel
Syrio Forel was a sword master who taught Arya how to sword dance and catch cats. His training made Arya become a swift fighter. When Ned gets arrested for treason, some Lannister men try to take Arya, but Syrio enters a fight with them. His skill shines as he defeats all the men.
Doreah, Irri, and Jhiqui
Doreah, Irri, and Jhiqui are the three maids of Daenerys. They were given to her as gifts when she married Khal Drogo. Irri and Jhiqui were the same age as Daenerys and became maids when Khal Drogo destroyed their father’s Khalasar. Irri later becomes more of a friend to Daenerys. Doreah is the oldest of Daenerys’s maids. She was gifted to her by Viserys from Mopatis, who found her in a pleasure house in Lys. Doreah teaches her how to please Khal Drogo in bed.
Janos Slynt
Janos is the commander of the City Watch. After Ned gets arrested and killed, he is placed on the small council and turned into a lord; this angers Tywin Lannister, who states that Janos was of common blood and did not deserve to be among noblemen.
Marillion
Marillion is a singer who meets Catelyn in an inn on her way back to Winterfell. When Catelyn detains Tyrion, Marillion follows her to the Eyrie and survives an attack on Catelyn’s men.
Bronn
Bronn is a sellsword who follows Catelyn to Eyrie. After he survives the attack on them, he reaches the Eyrie with Tyrion, and when Tyrion requests a trial by combat, Bronn chooses to become his champion. He wins the fight and leaves Eyrie with Tyrion.
Brynden Tully
Brynden Tully, also called blackfish, is Hoster Tully’s brother and Catelyn’s uncle. He welcomes Catelyn when she reaches the bloody Gate in the Vale of Arryn. Later, he decides to join Robb Stark and fight against the Lannisters.
Osha
Osha is a wildling woman who gets captured by Robb Stark after she and her people try to capture Bran and request a ransom. When Bran goes beneath the tombs of the lords of Winterfell, Osha carries him instead of Hodor.
Ser Vardis Egen
Ser Vardis Egen was a knight and the right-hand man of Jon Arryn. He was the captain of guards, and after Jon died, he became the Captain of Guard to Jon’s son. When Tyrion requests a trial by combat, Alyssa chooses Vardis as her champion, and Tyrion picks Bronn. The fight ends with Vardis losing his life.
Mirri Maz Duur
Mirri Maz Duur was a woman Daenerys rescues from getting raped by Khal Drogo’s men after conquering Khal Ogo. She sells her services to Daenerys as a healer and assists Drogo with his wounds. Later, Drogo’s wounds get infected, and in a desperate attempt to save his life, Daenerys agrees to Mirri using dark magic. The spell does not work, and Daenerys loses her son along with Drogo. Mirri gets placed on the same stake as Drogo’s body, and she gets burnt alive.
Beth Cassel
Beth is the only child of Rodrik Cassel. She speculates that Sansa will marry Joffrey and become queen, but Sansa tells her not to make up stories.
Old Nan
