Relevance in a Song of Ice and Fire
A Game of Thrones
When Lord Eddard Stark becomes the Hand of the King, King Robert Baratheon hosts the Hand’s Tourney at King’s Landing. Jared Frey and his brothers attend the event, but he is too old to participate. After Lord Ned’s arrest, Robb Stark rallies the Northmen and marches the South to free his father. His mother, Catelyn, parleys with Lord Walder Frey to enable her son to cross the Twins. During the negotiation, Jared attends to his father. Later, a deal gets finalized for Robb to marry a Frey bride.
A Clash of Kings
With the Frey alliance, Jared and his brothers fight alongside Lord Roose Bolton in the Battle of the Green Fork. The Lannister force defeats and captures Jared and his brothers, Hosteen Frey, Danwell Frey, and Ronel Rivers. Later, Arya Stark notices the brothers getting ransomed off at Harrenhal. Jared joins the Frey force at Harrenhal after its fall.
Meanwhile, Lord Mace Tyrell and Lord Tywin Lannister ally to fight against Stannis Baratheon at the Battle of the Blackwater. After Stannis’s downfall, Hosteen declares that Robb Stark has lost the war and should make peace.
A Storm of Swords
The agitation of the Freys turns into anger when they learn that Robb broke the Stark-Frey marriage pact, as he has taken Jeyne Westerling’s virginity and married her.
The Freys and Boltons secretly meet Tywin and make a deal. Lord Walder then agrees to rejoin Robb’s cause if his uncle Edmure Tully, the Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Trident, marries one of Jared’s half-sisters, Roslin Frey. However, Robb and his men enter the Freys’ trap. They die in a horrific betrayal that will become the Red Wedding. During the conflict, Sandor Clegane kills Jared’s son, Tytos Frey. He also loses his son-in-law, Ser Garse Goodbrook. Others, including Ser Wendel Manderly, The second son of Lord Wyman Manderly of White Harbor, are victims of the Red Wedding. After the wedding, Jared claims Robb killed himself, not the Freys.
A Dance with Dragons
Jared, one of his half-brothers Symond Frey, and his half-nephew Rhaegar Frey travel on the Lionstar to White Harbor to return Ser Wendel’s bones. They also try to ensure that the widowed Wyman Manderly and White Harbor support the true King, Tommen Baratheon and offer an alliance between the Freys and Manderlys with the marriages of his granddaughters Wynafryd and Wylla Manderly to Rhaegar and one of Walder Frey’s grandsons Little Walder Frey.
Lord Davos Seaworth, the Knight of Onions, arrives at the Merman’s Court at White Harbor to convince House Manderly to join Stannis Baratheon. He tells Lord Manderly the Freys killed his son, and Jared vehemently denies it, stating that Wendel died defending Lord Walder Frey from Robb Stark, who turned into a wolf. He also says Robb killed his son-in-law Garse Goodbrook and called the dead King a vile dog. Davos calls him a liar, almost sparking a conflict as Jared says he is committing slander.
Lord Wyman agrees with Jared and orders his cousin, Ser Marlon Manderly, to kill Davos. However, he fakes everything by having a look-alike get killed instead. Lord Wyman dips the criminal’s head in tar and places an onion in his mouth to mock Davos’ sigil. When Queen Cersei Lannister learns of Wyman’s mockery of the onion knight, she frees his only remaining son, Ser Wylis Manderly, a captive of the Iron Throne.
Lord Wyman Manderly reveals to Davos that he plans to bring the Starks back to power. He states that Theon Greyjoy did not kill Bran and Rickon Stark. Lord Manderly agrees to join Davos if he recovers Rickon from Skagos. He says he will give the three Freys palfreys as guest gifts as the rules of guest rights stipulate giving something.
Lord Wyman Manderly, Jared, and his entourage leave White Harbor for Barrowton to attend the wedding of Roose Bolton’s bastard Ramsay Bolton to Arya Stark, who was Jeyne Poole, to legitimize the Bolton rule of the North and Ramsay’s claim to Winterfell. However, on the way to the venue, Jared and his entourage disappear.
When Wyman reaches the venue, he states that the Freys had ridden ahead. Ramsay leads a search for Jared but cannot find him, and Roose Bolton changes his son’s wedding venue to Winterfell. Meanwhile, Stannis captures Deepwood Motte and gains northern support. Wyman serves the Freys and Boltons three large pies at Ramsay’s wedding feast. He asks for the song of the Rat Cook, who served a King a wrong pie containing his son. Big Walder Frey thinks Lord Manderly killed the missing Freys, and Hosteen later accuses Wyman of their murders, but Lord Wyman laughs at the idea.
Jared Frey: The Liar with No Honour
The Freys were among the vilest people in A Song of Ice and Fire, and Jared completes the stereotype. He was a dishonorable liar who joined his father in committing a sacrilegious crime. Even after his son Tytos Frey and his son-in-law Ser Garse Goodbrook died, Jared showed no emotion of loss. He later tried blaming Robb for an act committed by the Freys and Boltons and even shamelessly lied without sense.
