‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets‘ by J. K. Rowling has a wide variety of characters, including humans, wizards, witches, and other magical creatures. The story of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets‘ is significant for delving deeper into its major characters and highlighting aspects like identity and the choices made by the characters. Furthermore, we get a glimpse of who Lord Voldemort was and what turned him into his current self.

Harry Potter grapples with his newfound skills, like being a Parselmouth, and questions his identity. Ronald Weasley has to deal with his mother’s wrath when he does irresponsible things. Hermione Granger has to come to terms with being called a ‘Mudblood.’ Ginny Weasley has to come out of the trance-like state she was put in due to Dark Magic. Several other characters are deeply explored in this book.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is the protagonist of the Harry Potter series. In ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,’ he is much happier about having discovered Hogwarts and made new friends but is sad about not having received any letters or news from his friends. He eventually goes to Hogwarts after much turmoil and is faced with new challenges.

He finds out that he is a Parselmouth and is traumatized by the idea that he may be the Heir of Slytherin. He is determined to somehow stop the attacks on muggle-born students and enlists for help from his friends Hermione and Ron. He is confused about Dobby’s strange yet frantic attempts to save him but eventually faces all dangers and emerges victorious in the end.

Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger is Harry’s friend and probably the cleverest student of her time. She is very knowledgeable and constantly learns new things from books in the library. She, too, like the others, is alarmed by the attacks on muggle-born students and wants to find out a way to stop it. She leads the ‘trio’ into brewing the Polyjuice Potion, which turns its drinker’s appearance into whichever people they want to impersonate. Sadly, Hermione herself is attacked by the creature in the Chamber of Secrets and is petrified, but is crucial in helping Harry and Ron figure out the exact details of the attacking creature.

Ron Weasley

Ronald Weasley is a close friend of Harry Potter and helps Harry break out of his Uncle’s house when he is imprisoned there. Furthermore, Harry is invited by Ron to stay at his place, the Burrow, a trip and stay that Harry loves. When they miss the Hogwarts Express, Ron suggests taking his father’s bewitched flying car to Hogwarts, something he later regrets.

Harry and Ron drink the Polyjuice Potion and turn into Crabbe and Goyle, and then go to meet Malfoy to try and coerce him to tell them who the Heir of Slytherin is. Ron and Harry also go to the Forbidden Forest together and meet Aragog, the giant spider that is friends with Hagrid. Finally, they also go into the Chamber of Secrets together to save Ron’s sister Ginny who is taken into the chamber.

Dobby

Dobby is a house-elf, a species among magical creatures that are associated with housework and labor. Dobby meets Harry at his uncle’s house and constantly warns him about the dangers of going back to Hogwarts.

It is eventually found out that Dobby is responsible for blocking Harry’s letters, blocking Harry and Ron from entering platform nine and three quarters, and also the rogue bludger in the Quidditch match against Slytherin that almost gets Harry killed. He is also found to be Lucius Malfoy’s house-elf, and Harry finally frees him from the Malfoys’ by giving his sock to Dobby indirectly through Lucius Malfoy.

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart is the newly appointed Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor. He is a very famous, handsome wizard and the author of several best-selling books about his adventures. He likes being in the limelight constantly and repeatedly accuses Harry of trying to become famous through silly stunts. It is eventually revealed that he is a phony and that he stole the memories of actual brave wizards’ adventures and then wrote about it in his books. At the end of the book, Ron’s damaged wand backfires at him, and he loses his memory.

Lord Voldemort

Lord Voldemort, or Tom Riddle as his original name is later found to be, is the major antagonist in both this book and the entire series. He is a dark wizard who constantly appears through dark magic in strange forms since he was almost killed and lost his physical form when he attacked Harry when he was a year old. He is a descendant of Salazar Slytherin, and also the Heir of Slytherin, and is a Parseltongue. He summons the beast in the Chamber of Secrets, a Basilisk, which is a large snake that can kill people just by them looking at its eyes.

Rubeus Hagrid

Rubeus Hagrid is the gamekeeper and the groundskeeper at Hogwarts and a close friend of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. He was expelled from Hogwarts fifty years ago when he was wrongfully accused of letting out the beast in the Chamber of Secrets. He is also taken to Azkaban as suspicions arise after an increased number of students get attacked, but is eventually brought back after it is found out that Tom Riddle was responsible for this all along.

Arthur Weasley

Arthur Weasley is the father of all the Weasley siblings and the husband of Molly Weasley. He works at the Ministry of Magic in the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office. He is a very friendly wizard and is very interested to know about muggles and fascinated by their everyday lives.

Ginny Weasley

Ginerva Weasley, or Ginny Weasley, is a first-year student at Hogwarts. She is the youngest sibling amongst the Weasleys and is very obsessed and interested in Harry. She also sends Valentine’s poem through a dwarf dressed as Cupid to Harry. It is eventually found out that she was in possession of Tom Riddle’s diary and that he used it to manipulate her into doing his bidding.

Fred and George Weasley

Fred and George Weasley are the twins among the Weasley Siblings. They are very cheerful, humorous, and fun-loving, always planning adventures and similar pursuits. They help Harry break out of his uncle’s house along with their brother Ron despite eventually being scolded by their mother.

Molly Weasley

Molly Weasley is the mother of the Weasley siblings and is the wife of Arthur Weasley. She is very kind and affectionate to Harry and treats him like her own son when he visits The Burrow, the house in which the Weasleys stay.

Percy Weasley

Percy Weasley is a sixth-year student at Hogwarts and is from the Gryffindor house. He is the elder brother of Ron and is a prefect at Hogwarts. He is very easily disturbed by the Weasley brother’s antics and their humorous approach toward life. He is very serious and proud about his being a prefect and is extremely ambitious.

Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy is a second-year student at Hogwarts and shares some classes with Harry and Ron. He is from the Slytherin house and is always accompanied by his two cronies, Crabbe and Goyle. He constantly bullies and makes fun of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and their other friends. He and Harry face each other at the Dueling Club duel, where the snake that Malfoy creates is eventually stopped by Harry using Parseltongue.

Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy is a pure-blooded wizard who is very proud of his ancestry and pure-blooded nature. He is the father of Draco Malfoy and is responsible, as is later revealed, for the Chamber of Secrets being opened. He uses Tom Riddle’s diary to lure Ginny Weasley into doing his bidding. Eventually, Harry gets back at him by both freeing his house-elf, Dobby, and giving him back the destroyed diary.

Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom is a second-year student at Hogwarts and is a classmate and roommate of Harry and Ron. He is from the Gryffindor house. He is a forgetful and scared boy who is constantly bullied by Malfoy and sometimes Snape. He faints during the Herbology class when he sees Mandrakes but is later found to have a decent aptitude for Herbology.

Hedwig

Hedwig is Harry’s owl. She is snowy white and is very affectionate to Harry most of the time. She delivers letters from and to Harry.

Professor Albus Dumbledore

Professor Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster at Hogwarts and is a very accomplished and gifted wizard. He is very nice to Harry and guides him constantly. He is relieved of his duty by the board of governors due to the attacks on Muggle-born students, which later turn out to be an evil plot orchestrated by Lucius Malfoy. At the end of the book, he is reinstated as the headmaster of Hogwarts.

Professor Severus Snape

Professor Severus Snape is a teacher at Hogwarts. He teaches potions, but it has long been rumored that he has an eye set on the Defense against the Dark Arts job. Harry hates Snape the most out of his teachers because Snape constantly bullies Harry and is rude and abusive to him. Snape also insists on getting Harry and Ron expelled from Hogwarts when they both use a flying car to come to Hogwarts after they miss their train.

Dudley Dursley

Dudley Dursley is the cousin brother of Harry and the son of Petunia and Vernon Dursley. He used to constantly bully Harry, but after he realized that Harry is a wizard, he keeps his distance and restricts his bullying attempts to just verbal threats and abuses.

Petunia Dursley

Petunia Dursley is Harry’s Aunt and his mother Lily’s sister. She is married to Vernon Dursley and has a son called Dudley. She is very strict with Harry but is very nice to Dudley. She is very nosy about most things and keeps an eye on her neighbors frequently.

Vernon Dursley

Vernon Dursley is the uncle of Harry and the husband of Harry’s mother’s sister, Petunia. He is very strict and even abusive to Harry and is very scared of magic as a whole. He invites over the Masons, but after the mishap of Dobby dropping the pudding on Mrs. Mason, he locks up Harry in a room.

Hannah Abbott

Hannah Abbott is a second-year student at Hogwarts. She is from Hufflepuff house and is very defensive of Harry when Ernie Macmillan accuses him of being the heir of Slytherin.

Aragog

Aragog is the huge spider, or Acromantula, who resided in the Hogwarts castle 50 years before the events of this book and was mistaken to be the beast in the Chamber of Secrets. He was brought to the castle and tended to by Hagrid, who was wrongfully accused and expelled from Hogwarts. Aragog now lives in the Forbidden Forest and has several generations of descendants who he ordered to eat Harry and Ron when they visited him.

Professor Binns

Professor Cuthbert Binns is a teacher at Hogwarts and the only teacher who is a ghost. He teaches History of Magic, and his classes are considered quite boring because he teaches in a very monotonous tone without any interaction with his students.

Bill Weasley

Bill Weasley is the eldest son of Molly and Arthur Weasley and is the eldest brother of Ron and all the other Weasley siblings. He works at the Gringotts bank.

Charlie Weasley

Charlie Weasley is the second eldest son of Molly and Arthur Weasley and the brother of Ron and the other Weasley siblings. He works with dragons in Romania. He studied at Hogwarts, too, and was a popular student there.

Mr. Borgin

Mr. Borgin is the shopkeeper at Borgin and Burkes, a novelty and ancient artifact store especially known for containing relics related to dark magic. He is threatened by Lucius Malfoy when he and his son Draco visit the shop to discuss hiding some of his dark magic items.

The Bloody Baron

The Bloody Baron is the ghost of Slytherin’s house. He is known to be the only person besides Dumbledore who can control the troublemaker, Peeves the Poltergeist.

Katie Bell

Katie Bell is a third-year student at Hogwarts from the Gryffindor house. She is a chaser in the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

Millicent Bulstrode

Millicent Bulstrode is a second-year student at Slytherin house at Hogwarts. She faces Hermione Granger in a duel at the dueling club, which is when Hermione obtains a lock of hair assumed to be Millicent’s. However, after using it in the Polyjuice potion, Hermione realizes that the hair belonged to a cat.

Colin Creevey

Colin Creevey is a first-year student from the Gryffindor house at Hogwarts. He is a muggle-born student and is obsessed with Harry Potter. He constantly carries a camera with him and tries to chat with Harry every time he sees him. Colin Creevey is one of the victims of the beast in the Chamber of Secrets who gets petrified.

Vincent Crabbe

Vincent Crabbe is one of the cronies of Draco Malfoy, seen with Gregory Goyle almost every time they make an appearance. He is a second-year student from Slytherin house.

Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore

Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore was a wizard when he was alive and was later killed by decapitation. He is, therefore, one of the headless ghosts who conduct ‘headless hunts,’ and he doesn’t allow Nearly Headless Nick to take part in them. Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet him at Nearly Headless Nick’s Deathday party.

Professor Armando Dippet

Professor Armando Dippet was the headmaster of Hogwarts fifty years ago when the Chamber of Secrets was first opened.

Errol

Errol is the family owl of the Weasleys. He is a very old owl and is constantly delivering messages very late.

Fang

Fang is the Boarhound that resides in Hagrid’s hut. Fang is a very affectionate animal and constantly licks visitors coming to Hagrid’s hut, but is not very brave, as is seen when he goes with Harry and Ron to the Forbidden Forest.

Fawkes

Fawkes is the phoenix that is with Dumbledore in his office. Harry first sees Fawkes in Dumbledore’s office when he is about to be reborn from his own ashes. At the end of the book, Fawkes appears in the Chamber of Secrets with the Sorting Hat that contains in it the Sword of Gryffindor. It helps Harry defeat the Basilisk and Voldemort. Eventually, Fawkes also heals Harry’s wounds and also transports them safely out of the chamber.

Argus Filch

Argus Filch is the caretaker of Hogwarts Castle. He is eventually found to be a squib, a person with no proclivity for magic despite being born into a wizard family. He is very bitter about Harry and Ron looking at his ‘Quikspell’ pamphlets teaching basic magic. He is very distraught and assumes that Harry is responsible for his pet cat Mrs. Norris being petrified.

Justin Finch-Fletchley

Justin Finch-Fletchley is a second-year student at Hogwarts. He is from the Hufflepuff house and befriends Harry and Ron during Herbology classes. However, during the dueling club stand-off between Draco and Harry, Harry tries to use Parseltongue to prevent a snake created by Draco’s spell from going near Justin, but Justin misunderstands the situation as Harry tries to egg the snake towards him. Eventually, Justin is also one of the petrified victims attacked by the beast in the Chamber of Secrets.

Professor Flitwick

Professor Filius Flitwick is a teacher at Hogwarts. He teaches Charms. He has a rather squeaky voice and a short stature and is a rather gifted wizard. He is the head of Ravenclaw house.

Seamus Finnigan

Seamus Finnigan is a second-year student at Hogwarts. He is from the Gryffindor house and is both a roommate and classmate of Harry and Ron. He is close friends with Dean Thomas.

Cornelius Fudge

Cornelius Fudge is the Minister at the Ministry of Magic. He is the supreme ruling body in the Magical community of Great Britain. He comes to Hagrid’s hut to take him to Azkaban as the number of attacks on Muggle-born students increases, wrongfully accusing him of being the perpetrator.

Godric Gryffindor

Godric Gryffindor is one of the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Gryffindor house is named after him. The Sword of Gryffindor that Harry pulls out of the Sorting Hat to defeat the Basilisk is an artifact that once belonged to Godric Gryffindor.

Gregory Goyle

Gregory Goyle is a second-year student at Hogwarts. He is from Slytherin house and, along with Vincent Crabbe, is one of the henchmen or cronies of Draco Malfoy. He is impersonated by Ron using the Polyjuice Potion when he and Harry decide to go to the Slytherin dormitories to ask Draco about the Heir of Slytherin.

Madam Hooch

Madam Hooch is the flying instructor and Quidditch referee for most Quidditch games at Hogwarts. She has a very birdlike appearance with straight hair and distinctly colored eyes.

Angelina Johnson

Angelina Johnson is a fourth-year student at Hogwarts. She is from the Gryffindor house and plays as a chaser in the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

The Masons

The Masons are dinner guests at Number 4, Privet Drive, on the night of Harry’s twelfth birthday. Mr. Mason is a builder, and Uncle Vernon expects to make a deal on behalf of his company Grunnings, with Mr. Mason. Dobby drops Aunt Petunia’s pudding on Mrs. Mason’s head when Harry refuses to listen to Dobby.

Professor McGonagall

Professor Minerva McGonagall is a teacher of Transfiguration at Hogwarts and is the head of the Gryffindor house. She is very strict but is also very kind when needed. She decides not to expel Harry and Ron when they make their entrance to Hogwarts in the bewitched flying car. Furthermore, she assumes duties as the Headmistress of Hogwarts when the Board of Governors relieves Professor Dumbledore of his duty.

Moaning Myrtle

Myrtle Warren was a student at Hogwarts fifty years before the events of this book. She was killed by the beast from the Chamber of Secrets when she was in the girl’s bathroom and remained as a ghost there. She is known as Moaning Myrtle because she keeps moaning and wailing, and people avoid that bathroom.

Ernie Macmillan

Ernie MacMillan is a second-year student at Hogwarts. He belongs to the Hufflepuff house and seriously considers that Harry might be the Heir of Slytherin. He also tries convincing his fellow Hufflepuff mates that the reason why Harry could defeat Voldemort is that Harry is a powerful dark wizard himself.

Nearly Headless Nick

Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known as Nearly Headless Nick, is a ghost who resides in the Hogwarts castle and is friends with Harry. He invites Harry to his ‘Death Day’ party and is also one of the victims of the beast from the Chamber of Secrets and is found petrified alongside Justin Finch Fletchley.

Mrs. Norris

Mrs. Norris is Mr. Argus Filch’s pet cat who wanders about in the castle and warns Filch if there are any students loitering around. She is the first victim of the attack by the beast in the Chamber of Secrets.

Peeves the Poltergeist

Peeves the Poltergeist, as his name suggests, is a Poltergeist who stays in Hogwarts Castle along with the other ghosts. He is a serious troublemaker and is constantly dropping things on people and causing a ruckus in corridors. He also sings about Harry being the culprit when he is the first to see Harry with Nearly Headless Nick and Justin Finch Fletchley’s petrified bodies.

Madam Pince

Madam Irma Pince is the Librarian at Hogwarts. She is a strict witch and is skeptical when she sees the note signed by Professor Lockhart in Hermione’s hand to obtain books from the restricted section.

Madam Poppy Pomfrey

Madam Poppy Pomfrey is the head nurse at the Hospital Wing in Hogwarts. She is a very strict woman but very kind and nurturing. She helps Harry grow his bones back after Lockhart vanishes them, and she also helps bring back everyone who was petrified.

Salazar Slytherin

Salazar Slytherin is one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the Slytherin house is named after him. He was also responsible for creating the Chamber of Secrets and housing a Basilisk in it, with the hopes that one day, his heir would come to Hogwarts and carry out his mission of making Hogwarts a school for only ‘Pure-blooded’ wizards.

Alicia Spinnet

Alicia Spinnet is a fourth-year Gryffindor student at Hogwarts. She is a chaser in the Gryffindor Quidditch team and requests Oliver Wood to take Harry to safety when the rogue bludger attacks him during the match.

Professor Pomona Sprout

Professor Pomona Sprout teaches Herbology at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She is crucial in helping Madam Pomfrey make the medicine needed to bring back those who were petrified using Mandrake roots.

Dean Thomas

Dean Thomas is a second-year Gryffindor student and Harry’s classmate. He is also Harry’s roommate and is best friends with Seamus Finnigan.

Oliver Wood

Oliver Wood is a sixth-year student from Gryffindor house. He is also the captain and keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. He is very adamant to win the tournament and plans strategies, and asks his teammates to wake up early and join practice sessions.
