FAQs

Why was nobody killed by the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets?
The Basilisk never attacked anyone in the castle, but since its eyes are deadly too, anybody who saw it directly would have died. However, every single person who was petrified by it saw it through something else, as a reflection, which is why nobody died from looking at its eyes.
Did Dumbledore know that Harry would defeat the Basilisk on his own?
Since there is no way Dumbledore can envision the future, it was impossible for him to have known what would happen. However, he was probably almost certain that Harry is very brave and loyal to him and that he would do anything to prevent the Basilisk from hurting anyone and entrusted him with this task and also sent him help through Fawkes, his Phoenix.
