Angelina Johnson

Angelina Johnson was born in late October 1977 to the Johnson family in England, Great Britain. She joined Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1989 and was sorted into Gryffindor House. She became a Chaser of the Gryffindor Quidditch team in 1991 and was a Chaser in the team when Harry Potter joined the team as the Seeker. She was considered one of the best Quidditch players at her time in Hogwarts and also played in a team with excellent Quidditch players. She would eventually marry George Weasley, and they would have two children together – Fred Weasley II and Roxanne Weasley.

Angelina Johnson of Gryffindor House was also known to most people because she was a member of the Quidditch team. She was described as a tall black girl with black hair, dark skin, and brown eyes. Her hairstyle was once made fun of by Pansy Parkinson. Actress Danielle Tabor played Angelina Johnson’s role in the first three Harry Potter movie adaptations. Tiana Benjamin plays Angelina Johnson in the other Harry Potter movies where Angelina’s character appears. Fans of the Harry Potter series have liked the character of Angelina for her brave and steadfast demeanor.

Education

Angelina joined Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1989 after turning eleven. She was sorted into Gryffindor House along with the Weasley twins and Lee Jordan. Angelina would eventually join the Quidditch team of Gryffindor as a Chaser. 

She was friends with George and Fred Weasley and was close with her other Quidditch teammates, Oliver Wood, who was then the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, Alicia Spinnet, and Katie Bell. Angelina was also close to Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and other students from Gryffindor House. Angelina would go on to study at Hogwarts till she graduated in the year 1996.

Angelina Johnson was in her third year when Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger joined Hogwarts. As a Gryffindor student, she often met the Golden Trio during meals and in the Common Room. 

During the events of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, during her sixth year, the Triwizard Tournament was held at Hogwarts. Angelina put her name in the Goblet of Fire as she was of age to qualify for the tournament. However, she was not selected as the champion as Cedric Diggory was chosen as the champion representing Hogwarts. 

She seemed to like Care of Magical Creatures, thinking Hagrid was a much better teacher than his predecessor in her final year.

Quidditch

Her future husband, George Weasley, played as a beater in the team alongside his twin brother, Fred Weasley. The other team members included Alicia Spinnet and Katie Bell, who were also Chasers, and Oliver Wood, who was the captain and Keeper of the team. Angelina was promoted to Gryffindor Quidditch Captain in her seventh year after Oliver Wood graduated from Hogwarts.

Angelina was in the Quidditch team when Harry played his first match. She was also a part of the team when Gryffindor won the Quidditch Cup in Harry’s third year. She was considered an excellent chaser and was one of the best players in the Gryffindor Quidditch team. 

Angelina and Harry had very few disagreements when they played for the team. Still, Angelina was disappointed when Professor Umbridge placed Harry Potter in detention during Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as Harry couldn’t make it to tryouts during detention. However, she apologized to Harry the same Friday evening for being so curt. Angelina also asked Umbridge for permission to practice and, the very next day, told Harry and Ron that she had gotten permission to reform the team after she asked Professor McGonagall.

Appearances in the Harry Potter Series

Angelina Johnson first appeared in the Harry Potter series in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She was a chaser on the Quidditch team and was on the team during Harry’s first-ever Quidditch match. Harry was picked as the Seeker of the team on short notice by Professor McGonagall. Lee Jordan seemed to have a crush on her as he was a commentator who constantly praised her during the game. Angelina played in almost every match that Harry played after his first match.

Angelina was the only person before Harry to borrow a copy of Quidditch Through the Ages from the Hogwarts Library. During one of the matches against Hufflepuff, Professor Snape rewarded Angelina with a foul. Later, in a match against Slytherin, who was known for her rash playing, Angelina was knocked off her broom by two players from the Quidditch team after they boxed her in.

Angelina Johnson attended the first and only meeting of the Dueling Club organized by Gilderoy Lockhart in response to several attacks on Muggle-born students in 1992. When Gilderoy Lockhart threw his cloak into the audience, Angelina fought for it with Katie Bell and Alicia Spinnet, who also wanted to keep it for themselves.

Angelina was in the team that won the Quidditch Cup in her fifth year. Oliver Wood, the Gryffindor Quidditch team captain, ensured that they all practiced well as it was his last year at Hogwarts, and Gryffindor had not won the cup after he started playing. This was the same year Harry got his new broomstick, the Firebolt.

In her sixth year, Hogwarts was chosen to host the Triwizard Tournament. Angelina and several friends put their names in the Goblet of Fire. Fred and George Weasley, too, tried to put their names in even though they were underage, but that plan backfired. Cedric Diggory was chosen as the champion for Gryffindor, and Harry Potter was also chosen as the fourth champion for the tournament by the Goblet in an unusual manner. Fred Weasley asked Angelina if she wanted to go to the Yule Ball with him, and she agreed. They went to the Yule Ball together.

In her final year, she became a member of Dumbledore’s Army, which Hermione, Ron, and Harry created to teach defensive magic to the students of Hogwarts. Professor Umbridge refused to teach practical magic as the Ministry of Magic advised her that a theoretical knowledge of the subject should suffice for the exams. 

Angelina was also made the Gryffindor Quidditch team captain in Oliver Wood’s absence. She would have been the captain the year before this one, but there were no Quidditch matches due to the Triwizard Tournament. 

Harry faced a lifetime ban from Quidditch along with George and Fred Weasley after they attacked Draco Malfoy for insulting and abusing them after a Quidditch match. This was very sad news for Gryffindor and came as a shock to Angelina. She eventually selected Ginny Weasley as the new Seeker. Jack Sloper and Andrew Kirke were selected as the new beaters. She informed Harry about the same during the last meeting of Dumbledore’s Army.

Furthermore, Ron became the new Keeper for the team after the grueling tryouts. She claimed Ron could have been a better Keeper in the lot, but the others weren’t willing to commit to practice or were difficult to work with.

Angelina tried her best to be a very good captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, but the entire Quidditch season was constantly interrupted by difficult situations. Starting with constant detentions for Harry from Umbridge, the season continued with a torrential downpour, making it difficult to practice. 

After Harry caught the snitch and Gryffindor won a match, he got into a brawl with Draco Malfoy. This resulted in a lifetime ban for Harry, Fred, and George. The ban was lifted after Umbridge was sacked from Hogwarts. Harry even claimed that the spirit of Oliver Wood, who was then playing for Puddlemere United, may have inhabited Angelina Johnson, as she even scolded him in several instances for not figuring out how to avoid detention.

The final match, which took place between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, ended with Ron and Ginny playing a great game and Gryffindor winning both the match and the Quidditch Cup.

Later Life

Very little is known about Angelina Johnson’s life and career after she graduated from Hogwarts. She returned to Hogwarts to fight alongside her friends against the Dark Wizard Lord Voldemort in the Battle of Hogwarts. She had been a member of the Dumbledore’s Army and was still in touch with most of its members. After the end of the Second Wizarding War and the defeat of Lord Voldemort, she married George Weasley. They had two children named Roxanne and Fred II. She and her family attended the finals of the 2014 Quidditch World Cup.

Angelina Johnson – A Strong Female Character in the Harry Potter Series

Angelina Johnson is one of the prime examples of a strong female character in the Harry Potter series. Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Molly Weasley, Nymphadora Tonks, and Fleur Delacour are other women who can be considered strong female characters. In a genre that usually consists of strong male characters in the majority, Harry Potter does have a certain balance between well-written male and female characters.

Angelina Johnson was a very steadfast and brave woman. She was one of the best Chasers of her Quidditch team and always stood up for the women in her team, even during trivial moments like when Oliver Wood generalized the gender of his team by calling them “lads.” 

Furthermore, Angelina took over captaincy and helped the Gryffindor Quidditch team win the Quidditch Cup in the first year she became the captain. She also didn’t flinch or wince when she shook hands with Montague, the captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team, despite him trying to crush her hand.
