‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’
Diana Ring is one of the Ring twins at the Academy. Rather than embrace her individuality, she chooses to wholeheartedly show herself off as a twin. As such, she wears identical outfits to her brother Apollo most of the time. The two of them put their hair up in a bun and generally share bright and amiable personalities. Diana has a good sense of humor, cracking jokes wherever possible and laughing easily. She adored her brother and doted on him. Coriolanus describes her as an upbeat person. She is affectionately called by the nickname ‘Did’ by her classmates.
Diana and her brother are well-liked among their classmates. They are nicknamed Pollo and Didi. They are eager to take part in classroom discussion work on group projects, and participate in class events. The two of them lose their lives due to an explosion caused by rebel bombs during a tour of the arena, even before the start of the Games.
The etymology of Diana’s name comes from Roman mythology, where Diana is the virgin goddess of wild animals, hunting, the moon, and fertility. Her twin brother in Roman mythology is Apollo, much like Diana’s twin brother in the ‘Hunger Games’ universe is Apollo.
Diana Ring in ‘The Hunger Games’
A question that fans often have is, “When do the Hunger Games take place?” The Hunger Games is set in the future in a post-apocalyptic world. It is set in the future of North America, ravaged by ecological disasters and war. The events of the trilogy are said to be taking place 300 years into the future.
Thus, the 10th Hunger Games is set sometime 200+ years into the future. “Who was the winner of the 1st Hunger Games?”, one might ask. ‘The Hunger Games’ books by Suzanne Collins do not mention who the winner of the first Hunger Games is. The author also does not mention this information in any interviews. The winners of the 74th Hunger Games were Katniss Everdeen (skilled with a bow and arrow) and Peeta Mellark.
Who are the Ring twins in ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’? The Ring twins are Diana Ring and Apollo Ring. They are both students at the Capitol Academy along with Coriolanus Snow. Diana Ring is assigned as the mentor for the District 6 female tribute, Ginnee, in the 10th Hunger Games, while her brother is appointed as the mentor for Ginnee’s district partner, Otto. She is required to complete the mentorship program in order to graduate from the Capitol Academy.
Diana and her brother visit and feed their tributes at the Capitol Zoo. They are also involved in a group project that Dr. Volumnia Gaul sets them, to make the Games more interesting to the watchers. Diana and her brother express their apologies to Coriolanus for being stuck with the proposal of the project. They insisted that they had voted for Pup to head the proposal instead, but unfortunately, no one had taken their suggestion.
Diana Ring’s Death
The first explosion, which seemed to have come from the main gate, initiated a chain of eruptions around the arena.
‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’
The tributes and their mentors are taken on a tour of the Capitol Arena before the beginning of the 10th Hunger Games. Unfortunately, the arena is bombed during this tour, killing some people and injuring others. Diana Ring and her brother Apollo are both killed in the explosion. Both the female tribute and male tribute from District 6 were also killed by shrapnel during the bombing.
Nobody at the Capitol Academy pays any attention to the deaths of the district tributes. Instead, everybody mourns the death of the twins. Coriolanus, the protagonist of the story, notes how he feels bewildered by the deaths of the twins as he genuinely likes them.
A double funeral is held the following day for Diana and Apollo. They are both buried in matching silver coffins. While watching the coffins come into view, Coriolanus remembers a silly game that they used to play when they were seven years old. The game was called “Ring-around-the-Rings,” which was a play on the game “Ring-around-the-Posies.” The memory makes Coriolanus wish that he was seven years old again without a care in the world.
As the twins’ matching silver coffins came into focus, all he could think of was this silly game they’d made up on the playground during the war called Ring-around-the-Rings. The rest of the kids would chase down Didi and Pollo and then grab hands, forming a circle around them and trapping them. It always ended with the whole lot of them, Rings included, laughing their heads off in a heap on the ground.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
This might be a pertinent time to answer the question, “Why is the 10th Hunger Games erased?” All recordings of the 10th Hunger Games except one were erased from history in order to cover up the several Capitol lives that were lost during the Games. The loss of Capitol lives made the regime look too vulnerable. Who ultimately won the 10th Hunger Games? The 10th Hunger Games was won by Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute from District 12. Her mentor in the Games was future president Coriolanus Snow.
