'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' has one of the most interesting set of characters in all of the Harry Potter series. It has several new characters from the Triwizard Tournament, the Quidditch World Cup and the Pensieve.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire‘ by J. K. Rowling is known for being one of the most character-rich books in all of the Harry Potter series because of the wide variety of characters it possesses. The plot of ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire‘ sets up the rest of the series in the direction of a battle between good and evil, but furthermore, this book extends the scope of the readers’ imagination from a small British school that teaches magic to the entire world that indulges in magic and has major sporting events and ministries to entertain and sustain the crowd of magic-doers.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is a fourteen-year-old boy and the protagonist of this book. He is accidentally placed as the fourth champion in the Triwizard Championship and is left with no choice but to compete with elder contestants. He is a very brave and able wizard and eventually ends up fighting his biggest foe at the end of this book, Voldemort.

Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger is a close friend of Ron and Harry. She is considered by many as one of the brightest students in Hogwarts. Harry takes her help during his tasks for the Triwizard Cup, and she also is constantly helping Harry and Ron with their homework. Rita Skeeter writes gossip reports about her in the newspaper, but Hermione eventually reveals Rita Skeeter’s secret and gets the best of the bargain.

Ron Weasley

Ron Weasley is the closest friend of Harry Potter and is known for his wit and humor. He is angry with Harry when Harry is selected for the Triwizard Tournament because he thinks Harry deliberately put his name in the Goblet of Fire. Eventually, they settle their differences and end up being friends again.

Voldemort

Voldemort is the prime antagonist of this book and the entire series. He appears first in Harry’s dream and then in his bodily form for the first time after the day Harry’s parents died when he is resurrected by Peter Pettigrew. He summons his death eaters, insults them, and then forces Harry to duel with him. Harry eventually escapes this situation successfully.

Albus Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore is the Headmaster at Hogwarts School and is considered by most as one of the most gifted wizards ever to have lived. He is a judge in most of the Triwizard tournament tasks and is also one of the firmest believers of Harry’s claim that Voldemort is back and that the magical kind must be prepared for the ensuing chaos. He tries to reason with Cornelius Fudge about it, but the latter doesn’t seem to believe any of it.

Sirius Black

Sirius Black was a very close friend of James and Lily Potter and is godfather to Harry. He gifted Harry with his new broomstick, the Firebolt, which Harry uses to defeat the Dragon in the first task. Sirius also comes to Hogsmeade just to chat with Harry and warn him about the dangers of the final task.

Rubeus Hagrid

Rubeus Hagrid is the gamekeeper and keeper of keys at Hogwarts. He is also the professor for teaching ‘The Care of Magical Creatures’ course. He is equipped with a lot more duties in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire‘ because of the Triwizard Tournament and the guests from different countries visiting them.

Peter Pettigrew

Peter Pettigrew is an old friend of James Potter and Sirius Black who betrayed them. He goes to Voldemort and tries to resurrect him from his weak form. Also known as Wormtail, after his Animagus form of a rat, Peter is the one who performs the death curse on Cedric Diggory, instantly killing him.

Mad-Eye Moody

Mad Eye Moody is one of the most gifted aurors to have ever worked in the ministry. He is known for having captured several of the death eaters, including Barty Crouch Jr, who allegedly performed the Cruciatus Curse on Frank and Alice Longbottom. Mad Eye Moody is virtually absent in this book as it is later found out that Barty Crouch Jr has been disguising himself as Mad Eye Moody throughout the events of this book.

Ludo Bagman

Ludo Bagman is a jovial man with a very cheerful gait. He is the head of the Magical Games and Sports in the Ministry of Magic. He used to be a Quidditch player for the Wimbourne Wasps and the England Quidditch team. He places a bet with the Weasley brothers concerning the outcome of the Quidditch match but fails to pay them when they win the bet.

Rita Skeeter

Rita Skeeter is a reporter who is assigned to cover the Triwizard Championship. She is very keen to publish random and demeaning details about almost anyone she writes about. She is also an unlicensed Animagus and takes the form of a beetle, buzzing around and collecting random details from unsuspecting people.

Bartemius Crouch

Bartemius Crouch is the Head of the Department for International Magical Cooperation. He is a very strict and steadfast man who always goes by the rules and is in charge of overseeing the smooth running of the Triwizard Championship. He is killed towards the end of the book, which is later found to be done by his son, Bartemius Crouch Jr.

Bartemius Crouch Jr.

Bartemius Crouch Jr is the son of Bartemius Crouch. He was once alleged to be a death eater and sent to Azkaban, from where escaped, as is later found out. He disguises himself as Mad Eye Moody with the help of Polyjuice Potion and hides the real Mad Eye Moody in a magical container. Bartemius Crouch Jr is responsible for setting the Dark Mark in the sky at the Quidditch World Cup and is also the one who plans Harry’s entry into the Triwizard Tournament all up till the appearance at the cemetery of Tom Riddle Sr.

Sibyll Trelawney

Sibyll Trelawney is the professor of Divination at Hogwarts. She is known for predicting some of the most interesting and important prophecies, including the prophecy that led to the enmity between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. She also tends to make vague predictions about almost everything, out of which most are just ominous and predictions of dark outcomes.

Minerva McGonagall

Minerva McGonagall is a professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts. She is also the head of the Gryffindor house. She is a licensed Animagus and transforms into a cat. She is one of the first to voice her concern about Harry being forced to participate in the Triwizard tournament.

Severus Snape

Severus Snape is the professor of Potions at Hogwarts. He is very mean to Harry and constantly berates and bullies him. It is found out from Dumbledore’s memory from the Pensieve that Snape was in fact a death eater once. He is also in close contact with other death eaters, including Karkaroff, who shows him the dark mark on his hand.

Igor Karkaroff

Igor Karkaroff is the headmaster of the Durmstrang School of Magic. He is a guest at Hogwarts on account of the commencement of the Triwizard Tournament. He is found out to be a former death eater from the memories of Dumbledore at the Pensieve. He is responsible for the arrest of Barty Crouch Jr as he was the one who gave his name to the court, alleging that he is a death eater.

Madame Maxime

Madame Maxime is the headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. She is a very tall woman, probably because she is related to a giant. She seems very friendly to Hagrid, but it is later found out that she wanted more insights on the tasks of the Triwizard tournament for Fleur to be prepared for.

Fleur Delacour

Fleur Delacour is the champion of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic for the Triwizard Championship. She is a final-year student at Beauxbatons and is the only female participant in the Triwizard Tournament.

Viktor Krum

Viktor Krum is the seeker of the Bulgarian National Quidditch team. He is also a student at the Durmstrang School of Magic and gets selected as the champion to represent Durmstrang in the Triwizard tournament. He is earlier seen playing the final of the Quidditch World Cup against Ireland and catching the Snitch.

Cedric Diggory

Cedric Diggory is a final-year student at Hogwarts. He is chosen as a champion for the Triwizard Tournament from Hogwarts. He also plays as the seeker and captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team. Sadly, he gets killed by Peter Pettigrew at the end of the book when he and Harry make it to the cemetery of Voldemort’s father by the Championship trophy, which was set up to be a portkey.

Cho Chang

Cho Chang is a fifth-year student at Hogwarts. She is from the Ravenclaw house and is also the seeker of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. Harry finds her very attractive and asks her to accompany him to the Yule Ball, but she happens to have already decided to go with Cedric Diggory, so she refuses kindly.

Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom is a fourth-year student at Hogwarts. He belongs to the Gryffindor house and is a roommate of Harry and Ron. Neville is very keen on learning about plants and is an ace student in the subject of Herbology. He is terrified during Mad Eye Moody’s class about the unforgivable curses. It is found out eventually that this may be because his parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom, were tortured with the Cruciatus Curse.

Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin was Harry’s Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in his third year. He is also a friend of Harry’s parents, James and Lily, and his godfather Sirius.

Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy is a fourth-year boy in Hogwarts. He belongs to the Slytherin house and is a bully to most students from Gryffindor, including Harry. He is very obedient and submissive to his father, Lucius Malfoy, who is later found to be a death eater. Furthermore, Draco is very keen on teasing and bullying Harry, Ron, and Hermione, as he does when he warns them that they’re next at the Quidditch World Cup riot.

Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy is the father of Draco Malfoy. He is a very rich and highly influential man. He gets very good tickets to watch the Quidditch World Cup final with his son Draco and his wife, Narcissa. He is eventually found to be a death eater and is among one of them to assemble at the cemetery when Voldemort returns.

Ginny Weasley

Ginny Weasley is the youngest daughter of Arthur and Molly Weasley. She is the youngest sibling among the Weasley siblings and is a sister to Ron and the twins.

Percy Weasley

Percy Weasley is the third eldest brother among the Weasley siblings and is the son of Arthur and Molly Weasley. He recently graduated from Hogwarts and is currently an assistant to Barty Crouch at the Ministry of Magic. He is very keen on making an impression and very ambitious despite his boss, Barty Crouch, who sometimes even forgets his name and calls him Weatherby, something that the Weasley twins later make fun of.

Fred Weasley and George Weasley

Fred and George Weasley are the twin siblings in the Weasley family. They are very funny, humorous, and constantly pranking someone or coming up with ingenious ideas and jokes. They want to badly make some money to open a joke shop and therefore bet on the outcome of the Quidditch finals with Ludo Bagman, but sadly never get paid after they win. However, Harry eventually gives his Triwizard Cup winnings of a thousand galleons to both of them to open the joke shop.

Bill Weasley

Bill Weasley is the eldest of the Weasley siblings. He works for the Gringotts Bank. He is a handsome man with a ponytail and is adamant about keeping it despite his mother, Molly Weasley’s constant requests to get it removed. He visits Harry along with his mother when the parents of the Triwizard Champions are supposed to pay a visit.

Charlie Weasley

Charlie Weasley is the second eldest brother among the Weasley siblings. He works in Romania with Dragons. He pays a visit to Hogwarts with the four dragons that arrive at Hogwarts for the first task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Molly Weasley

Molly Weasley is the wife of Arthur Weasley and mother to all the Weasley Siblings. She is a very kind and nurturing woman but equally strict when it comes to her children. She has a tussle with the Weasley twins because of their notorious antics but is later very welcoming of them after they return from the Quidditch World Cup because of how there was a major riot there.

Arthur Weasley

Arthur Weasley is the father of all the Weasley Siblings and is the husband of Molly Weasley. He works at the Ministry of Magic and is the head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. He helps out Mad Eye Moody when he reports that there has been an intruder in his house. Furthermore, Arthur is also very duty-bound and helps out after the riot at the Quidditch World Cup despite just being there on vacation.

Tom Riddle Sr

Tom Riddle Sr is the father of Tom Riddle, who later named himself Voldemort. Tom Riddle Sr was killed by Lord Voldemort, and his bones are later used by Peter Pettigrew to resurrect Lord Voldemort.

Winky

Winky is the house-elf of Mr. Barty Crouch. She is caught by the aurors gathered under the freshly conjured Dark Mark with Harry’s wand in her hand. Barty Crouch fires her but is later hired by Dumbledore to work at Hogwarts.

Dobby

Dobby is the former house-elf of the Malfoys. He is very kind to Harry because of how he freed him from Lucius Malfoy, who ill-treated him.

Vernon Dursley

Vernon Dursley is the uncle of Harry and the husband of Petunia, Harry’s mother’s sister. He is a very rude man and is especially brutal to Harry.

Petunia Dursley

Petunia Dursley is the wife of Vernon Dursley and is the sister of Lily, Harry’s mother. She, like the rest of her family, is very rude to Harry and treats him very poorly.

Dudley Dursley

Dudley Dursley is the cousin brother of Harry Potter and is the son of Petunia and Vernon Dursley. He is a bully to Harry most of the time but is slightly vigilant after he realizes that Harry knows magic.

Frank Bryce

Frank Bryce used to be a soldier in the army and worked as a cook and caretaker for the family of Tom Riddle Sr. He was accused of murdering Tom Riddle Sr and his parents and was sentenced to prison. However, after he did his time, he returned to the same house and stayed there until he was one day killed by Voldemort.

Bertha Jorkins

Bertha Jorkins was an employee at the Ministry of Magic. She went missing for quite long until it was eventually found out that Voldemort used her to extract information about the Triwizard Cup and then killed her.

Amos Diggory

Amos Diggory is the father of Cedric Diggory. He is an acquaintance of Mr. Weasley as he also works at the Ministry of Magic. Harry and the others travel with him by Portkey to attend the Quidditch World Cup finals.

Lily Potter

Lily Potter is the mother of Harry Potter. She is the wife of James Potter, and she appears in a different form with him when Harry and Voldemort’s wands create a merge called the Priori Incantatem. Together, they save Harry, and he returns to the stadium with the help of the Portkey.

James Potter

James Potter is the father of Harry Potter and the husband of Lily Potter. He is also a close friend of Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. He appears with Lily Potter when Harry is fighting Voldemort and saves him.

Argus Filch

Argus Filch is the caretaker at Hogwarts. He is very rude to most students and is constantly trying to catch them performing pranks. He has a pet cat named Mrs. Norris, with whom he prowls around the castle.

Cornelius Fudge

Cornelius Fudge is the Minister of Magic. He is seen with the other dignitaries at the Quidditch World Cup final. He fails to believe Harry and Dumbledore concerning their claim about the return of Voldemort.

Seamus Finnigan

Seamus Finnigan is a fourth-year student at Hogwarts. He belongs to the Gryffindor house and is the roommate and friend of Harry and Ron. He is of Irish descent and is seen with his mother at the Quidditch World Cup.

Dean Thomas

Dean Thomas is a fourth-year student at Hogwarts. He is from the Gryffindor house and is close friends with Seamus Finnigan. He is also the roommate of Seamus and Harry, Ron and Neville as well.

Parvati Patil

Parvati Patil is a fourth-year student at Hogwarts. She is from the Gryffindor house and has a twin sister named Padma in Ravenclaw. Harry asks her to accompany him to the Yule Ball, and Padma decides to go with Ron.

Colin Creevey

Colin Creevey is a third-year student at Hogwarts. He belongs to the Gryffindor house and is an ardent fan of Harry. He introduces his younger brother Dennis to Harry as he is sorted into Gryffindor’s house.

Gregory Goyle

Gregory Goyle is a fourth-year student at Hogwarts. He belongs to the Slytherin house and is one of Draco Malfoy’s henchmen. He and Crabbe are usually the ones that accompany Draco when he bullies anyone.

Vincent Crabbe

Vincent Crabbe is a fourth-year student at Hogwarts. He is from the Slytherin house and, along with Goyle, is the one who is with Draco Malfoy every time he tries to bully someone.

Nearly-Headless Nick

Nicholas De Mimsy Porpington, or Nearly Headless Nick, is a ghost in Hogwarts. He belongs to the Gryffindor house.

Peeves

Peeves the Poltergeist is a notorious poltergeist from Hogwarts. He is constantly causing trouble in the castle and is practically afraid of no one except Dumbledore and the Bloody Baron, another ghost at Hogwarts.

Moaning Myrtle

Moaning Myrtle, or Myrtle Warren, is a ghost at Hogwarts. She resides in a girls’ lavatory and is constantly moping and brooding about her death that happened fifty-two years ago. She helps Harry figure out the second clue for the Triwizard Championship.

Mr. Roberts

Mr. Roberts is a muggle who is in charge of managing the tents and accommodation at the disguised campsite where the Quidditch finals are supposed to take place. He is also attacked by the Death Eaters along with his family after the commencement of the event.

Hedwig

Hedwig is a snowy white-colored pet owl of Harry.

Pigwidgeon

Pigwidgeon is a small pet owl of Ron.

Crookshanks

Crookshanks is Hermione’s pet ginger cat.

Padfoot

Padfoot is the animagi form of Sirius, a black shaggy dog.

Fawkes

Fawkes is the phoenix that is always with Professor Dumbledore.

Why is it bad to put your name in the Goblet of Fire?

It is not bad to put your name in the Goblet of Fire unless you are older than 17 years old. For the sake of the student’s safety, it was decided that the Goblet of Fire would discard the names of anybody who were younger than 17. However, somehow, somebody hoodwinked the Goblet of Fire and put Harry Potter’s name in it, even though he was 14. It is later found that it was Barty Crouch Jr.

Why did Barty Crouch Jr. hate Snape and Malfoy?

Barty Crouch Jr. hated Snape because he believed that Snape had betrayed Voldemort by coming to teach at Hogwarts after his downfall. Barty Crouch Jr. hated Lucius Malfoy because he believed that Lucius Malfoy was a coward and that he, too, had betrayed Voldemort.

Why did Barty Crouch Jr. teach Harry how to resist the Imperius Curse?

Barty Crouch Jr. was, in fact, disguised as Mad Eye Moody when he taught the three unforgivable curses to the class. However, it was crucial for him to do things that Mad Eye Moody would do so as not to blow his cover. Therefore, he did a lot of things, including teaching Harry the ways to resist the Imperius Curse just so that he could be perceived as authentic.
