Duties of a Gamemaker

Designing the Hunger Games Arena

The Gamemakers in the Hunger Games have several duties to fulfill, including designing and building the arena from scratch every single year. The Gamemakers sit in the control room and decide what the arena will look like, how big it will be, what the weather will be like, and what kind of terrain will cover the area. They also decide what supplies the Cornucopia will provide each year.

Gamemakers are in charge of controlling the environment within the arena. They have the most advanced technology by which they can include diverse environmental elements at the click of a button. They can introduce trees, lakes, animals and even induce environmental disasters such as forest fires or floods. The Gamemakers can also control what time of the day it is and can control the manner in which a tribute behaves by introducing wild cards into the arena.

Surveillance and Muttations

Gamemakers are tasked with the responsibility of surveillance over the entire arena. This is because it is necessary for the Capitol and the audience to know where a tribute is and what they are doing at all times. Thus, Gamemakers install cameras in every nook and cranny of the arena so that there are eyes on the tributes at all times. This also greatly helps with televising the Games to the rest of the nation.

Gamemakers also keep count of the tributes who die in the arena. At the end of each day, they show the faces of the dead tributes along with their district number while sounding a canon to signify their deaths.

Gamemakers often develop muttations to introduce into the arena. These mutts can either be developed before the Games begin, such as the Jabberjays that were a part of the Third Quarter Quell, or they can be developed in the middle of the Games. A good example of this is the wolf mutts that appear at the end of the 74th Hunger Games. These mutts strangely seem to possess the eyes of the tributes who passed away and were most likely developed after their deaths.

Training Scores and Entertainment

The Gamemakers also have several duties to fulfill before the Games begin. For instance, they are in charge of reviewing the tributes’ skills and providing them with a training score.

The ultimate duty of the Gamemakers, however, is to keep the audience at the Capitol entertained. Since viewership would be greatly affected by dull and boring Games, the Head Gamemaker’s life depends upon how entertaining they can make the Games. The bloodier and gorier the Games are, the more fame and reputation that a Gamemaker wins.

Head Gamemakers

Head Gamemakers are in charge of designing and organizing the Hunger Games each year. They have an immense responsibility on their shoulders to ensure that the Games take place smoothly without a glitch. A good year of the Games, with lots of blood, gore, and entertainment, can bring the Head Gamemaker fame and reputation. On the other hand, even a small mistake can cost them their lives.

Known Gamemakers

Seneca Crane

Seneca Crane was the Head Gamemaker in the 74th Hunger Games. He had a much more prominent role in the Hunger Games film than he did in the novel. Due to his mistake of letting Katniss and Peeta remain alive at the end of the Games, it is implied that he was hanged (in the novel). In the film, however, he is locked up in a room with poisonous Nightlock Berries, which he was presumably forced to consume.

Plutarch Heavensbee

Plutarch took over the position of Head Gamemaker after Seneca Crane. He helped design the arena for the Third Quarter Quell. However, Plutarch was a rebel in secret, maneuvering the Games in Katniss’ favor. Once the Second Rebellion began, Plutarch became one of the leaders of the Rebellion and provided the rebels with useful information on President Snow and the Capitol.

Dr. Volumnia Gaul

Dr. Volumnia Gaul was the Head Gamemaker in the 10th Hunger Games when the Games were still in the developmental stages. She wanted to make the Games more interesting and to involve the citizens in them. To do this, she elicited the help of the mentors (i.e., the students of the Academy) by roping them into a school project with her.

Lucia

Lucia is a Gamemaker in the 74th Hunger Games. She appears only in the film and not in the novel. She is shown to be the one who created the wolf mutts that killed Thresh and chased Katniss, Peeta, and Cato.

Coriolanus Snow

Coriolanus Snow, who was part of the mentor program introduced during the 10th Hunger Games, became an apprentice Gamemaker after the 10th Hunger Games. He rose the ranks very quickly by introducing several new innovations, such as rewards for the Victors and the concept of the Victors’ Villages.
