Relevance in A Song of Ice and Fire

A Storm of Swords

After taking Ser Jorah Mormont’s advice to get her army, Daenerys travels to Astapor, where she meets Krazyns mo Nakloz, a member of the Good Masters. With the help of a translator, Missandei, Kraznys tells Daenerys that his army, the Unsullied, has no fear. Thinking she cannot speak High Valyrian, Kraznys insults Daenerys, calling her a bitch as he shows her around. He proves how emotionless his army is by slicing off the nipple of one of the Unsullied soldiers.

Kraznys tells Dany she can have all eight thousand men but will exchange them for Drogon. Retreating to think about the deal, Ser Arstan Whitebeard advises Dany to abort the plan. However, she refuses and gives Drogon to Kraznys for his army. After the sale ends, Daenerys frees Missandei and reveals she can speak High Valyria. She then shouts Dracarys, and Drogon burns Kraznys on the face.

A Dance with Dragons

After the Siege of Astapor, the survivors destroy Kraznys’ pyramid believing he brought all their misfortune.

Relevance in Adaptation

In HBO’s Game of Thrones, actor Dan Hildebrand portrayed Kraznys mo Nakloz. He appeared in season 3 and got featured in 3 episodes. When Daenerys travels to Astapor, she meets Kraznys and tries buying the Unsullied from him. As Dany speaks in the Common Tongue, the slaver thinks she cannot understand High Valyrian and insults her, calling her a bitch and a Westerosi Whore. Kraznys’ translator, Missandie, omits all his insults as the transaction continues.

Daenerys tells Kraznys she plans to retake the Iron Throne and Westeros, and they agree to trade the Unsullied for one of Dany’s dragons. The Good Masters gather to witness the closure of the sale, and Dany hands over her dragon to Krazyns. However, Drogon struggles, and Kraznys complains, stating: “Ivetra j’aspo zya dyni do majis,” meaning: “Tell the birth the dragon won’t come.” Then, in perfectly fluent High Valyrian, Daenerys tells Krazynys that a dragon is not a slave.

Dany then tells the crowd she is Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, of the blood of Old Valyria. She turns to Krazyns and tells him High Valyrian is mother-tongue and she understood everything he said. She orders the Unsullied to kill all the Good Masters and every man that holds a whip as a slaver. She turns to Kraznys and orders Drogon to burn him to death.

Kraznys mo Nakloz: The Vain Slaver

Krazyns mo Nakloz was among the most entitled people in A Song of Ice and Fire. He believed no one deserved his respect as he was a Good Master, one of the incredibly myopic rulers of Astapor. However, he met a well-deserving end, one befitting a slaver who prided himself on the death and torture of other human beings.
