Later, King Robert gets killed by Queen Cersei Lannister, and Lord Eddard Stark gets arrested.

The War of the Five Kings begins, and Ser Kevan Lannister tells his brother Lord Tywin Lannister that Jason Mallister is dangerous to the Lannisters’ campaign. Tywin dismisses his brother, stating the Lord of Seagard is not strong enough to face House Lannister. In King’s Landing, Grand Maester Pycell sends ravens to Jason and other river lords, asking them to swear their loyalty to King Joffrey I Baratheon.

Jason remains calm when he learns Catelyn Stark freed Jaime Lannister and tasked Brienne of Tarth with returning him to King’s Landing. Lord Hoster Tully dies, and the Lord of Seagard is one of seven nobles that launch his funeral boat.

Jason meets Robb at Hag’s Mire on the way to the Twins. He brings the captain of Myraham, who discloses the news of Lord Balon Greyjoy’s death.
