A Storm of Swords

After taking advice from Ser Jorah Mormont and heading to Astapor, Daenerys orders her new army, the Unsullied, to sack the city. She frees all the slaves and marches on Yunkai. Upon learning of Astapor’s fall, the Wise Masters of Yunkai hire the Stormcrows to defend the city.

On reaching, Dany parleys with the sellsword company and offers its captains gold if they move to her side. However, Prendahl na Ghezn rejects her proposal. As the sellsword company comprises free men, a meeting gets held to decide to switch to Daenerys’s side. Before the meeting concludes, Daario Naharis kills Prendahl and the other captain, Sailor the Bald. He brings their heads and swears loyalty to Dany as he takes command of the Stormcrows.

As Daenerys’ army marches to Meereen, Daario gets closer to the Queen by gifting her flowers. Because she gets upset at the sight of child slaves killed by the Great Masters, he tries to prevent her from seeing the gory details of the murdered children. The siege of Meereen begins, and Dany successfully takes the city.

A Dance with Dragons

After conquering Meereen, Daenerys sends Daario to reopen the trading routes between Lhazar and Meereen. He fights against the Long Lances on the Khyzai Pass. When the Sons of the Harpy begin assassinating soldiers of the unsullied, the Green Grace suggests that Dany marries Hizdahr zo Loraq to stop the violence, but Daario suggests she slaughters the Great Masters instead to end the violence; this makes Daenerys angry. She orders Daario to patrol the Yunkish hinterlands and report to Ser Barristan Selmy, the Hand of the Queen. Later, Dany gets infatuated with Daario and begins sleeping with him, and when he kisses her in public, Ser Barristan gets angry.

After Hizdahr fulfills a promise to end the violence for 90 days, he marries Daenerys at the Temple of the Graces, and the fighting pits get reopened. Prince Quentyn Martell and his men join the Stormcrows, and after they reveal themselves to the Queen, it makes Daario angry. He gets increasingly violent with Dany’s wedding to Hizdahr. He refuses to attend the wedding and becomes increasingly rash after the event. When Yunkai meets with Dany to negotiate peace, Daario, Jhogo, Groleo, and Hero are given as hostages.

When the fighting pits get reopened, the noise attracts Drogon. To protect the people from her dragon, Daenerys flies away from him. The Yunkish forces then kill Groleo and order King Hizdahr to kill Daenerys dragons, Rhaegal and Viserion, before a peace treaty can get created.

The Yunkish forces see him as a weak ruler, and when he fails to control Grey Worm, Ser Barristan starts planning on arresting him. Barristan suggests they rescue Daario. However, Skahaz states otherwise, as he wants the captain to get killed so a new leader can get chosen. With Daario in captivity, the Widower and Jokin become the new captains of the Stormcrows.

Appearance in Adaptations

In the HBO series Game of Thrones, Ed Skrein and Michiel Huisman portrayed Daario. He appeared in seasons 3, 4, 5, and 6 and starred in 21 episodes. Daario was a lieutenant in the sellswords company, the Second Sons. However, he killed his superiors, Mero and Prendahl na Ghenz, and took command of the Second Sons.

After Dany deliberated with the sellsword company, they retreated, and after a vote, Daario gets chosen to assassinate the Queen. However, he kills his superiors and becomes the leader of the company. He then swears loyalty to Dany, and they have sex. When the Queen leaves Meereen for Westeros, she orders her lover to stay behind and ensure a new government enters power.

Daario Naharis: The Sellsword

Though it is unclear why Daario betrayed his fellow captains for Daenerys, he was a sellsword with no sense of honor. Though his actions helped Daenerys against Meereen, killing the people he fought alongside showed he had no loyalty and would willingly jump ship to save his skin.
