Relevance in A Song of Ice and Fire
A Storm of Swords
After King Renly Baratheon’s death, Tyrion Lannister agrees with the Tyrells to wed Margaery to Joffrey. Alerie follows her daughter to King’s Landing after the Battle of the Blackwater. Lady Olenna, Mace Tyrell’s mother, also joins the retinue and meets Sansa Stark on reaching the city. She asks the Stark girl about Joffrey and though reluctant, Sansa reveals how cruel the King was to her.
Lady Olenna Tyrell tries arranging a wedding between her grandson Willas and Sansa but Lord Tywin Lannister finds out and interrupts the plan. At Margaery’s wedding feast, tragedy strikes as Joffrey gets poisoned. Alerie comforts her daughter after the Purple Wedding and remains at King’s Landing.
Tyrion gets charged with Joffrey’s death and after his champion, Prince Oberyn Martell, dies, he gets sentenced to death. However, before his execution, his brother, Ser Jaime Lannister, frees him. Before leaving, Tyrion sneaks into the Tower of the Hand and kills his father.
A Feast for Crows
Alerie Tyrell attends Lord Tywin’s funeral and witnesses Cersei destroying the Tower of the Hand. Margaery gets married to Tommen Baratheon and becomes Queen. Olenna returns home with her daughter-in-law but leaves her grandchildren behind.
Relevance in Adaptations
In HBO’s hit tv series Game of Thrones, Alerie Tyrell did not get an appearance. Her children traveled to King’s Landing after the Battle of Blackwater and Margaery became Queen. After the rise of the Faith Militant, Margaery, Loras, and Cersei get arrested on charges of fornication and adultery.
After Cersei makes the walk of atonement, a tribunal gets held by the High Sparrow to decide Loras’s fate. However, Cersei refuses to attend and a massive wildfire bomb gets detonated, killing Alerie’s children and Olenna’s son Mace. After the event, Olenna becomes the de facto leader of Highgarden.
From House of the Dragon, Alicent Hightower is Alerie Hightower’s relative. She is Alerie’s great-great-great-aunt.
Alerie Tyrell: The Lady of Highgarden
Though she barely got enough characterization, Alerie Tyrell is a magnificent woman with the beauty of old Valyria. She is kind and caring, unlike her mother-in-law Olenna. Alerie is one of the few people who did not let the brutal, unforgiving world change her.
