Caradoc Dearborn

Caradoc Dearborn was a wizard born in Great Britain and a member of the Order of the Phoenix during the First Wizarding War. Although he does not appear in the Harry Potter series, Alastor Moody briefly mentions him in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when he shows Harry Potter a photograph of the original Order of the Phoenix.

Caradoc Dearborn went missing around the height of the conflict between the wizarding world and Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Caradoc’s disappearance remained a mystery, and his fate was never revealed.

Early Life And Education

Almost nothing is known about Caradoc Dearborn’s early life and childhood. His biography is nonexistent in the Harry Potter series. However, it is likely that he was born in Great Britain and studied at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He got his Hogwarts letter when he turned eleven years old.

He may have been in Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw, as there were probably no members of the original Order of the Phoenix from Slytherin. Severus Snape was likely the only member of the new Order of the Phoenix established during the Second Wizarding War from Slytherin.

Etymology

Caradoc Dearborn’s first name, ‘Caradoc,’ was the name of one of the knights of the Round Table in the Arthurian Legend. He was also sometimes referred to as Caradog. He was an ancestor of the Kingdom of Gwent which belonged to Welsh Mediaeval kings. The Latinized form of Caradoc is Caractacus. 

Joining The Order Of The Phoenix

Caradoc Dearborn had likely completed his education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when the First Wizarding War started. When he joined the original Order of the Phoenix, created by Albus Dumbledore, the Dark Lord Voldemort had already asserted his power in the wizarding world. According to his peers, Caradoc was a talented wizard with top-notch magical skills. His magical abilities allowed him to emerge victorious in several battles.

Fighting In The First Wizarding War

Caradoc Dearborn was one of the important members of the Order of the Phoenix, which became active during the First Wizarding War after Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters started to attack Muggles, Muggle-born and Half-blood wizards, and witches. Several young wizards and witches joined the Order of the Phoenix, including James Potter, Lily Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Dorcas Meadows, Marlene McKinnon, and Mad-Eye Moody.

Caradoc fought in several battles during the early days of the First Wizarding War. However, a few months after the first official photograph of the Order of the Phoenix was taken, Caradoc went missing. He remained missing despite many efforts to find him, and the mystery of his disappearance was never solved. 

One of the most prominent theories of his disappearance was that either Lord Voldemort or his Death Eaters kidnapped and killed Caradoc and hid his body or destroyed it. It is also possible that he was killed during some undocumented battle or duel, but the information of his death was not relayed to anyone. Caradoc may have died as a hero in battle. 

Lastly, a faint glimmer of hope remained among Caradoc’s loved ones, including his mother, that he had not died and would eventually return. Caradoc Dearborn remained missing despite this possibility until Mad-Eye Moody showed Harry the photograph containing the Original Order of the Phoenix members, including Harry’s parents, James Potter and Lily Potter.

Death And Legacy

Caradoc Dearborn’s disappearance remained one of the greatest mysteries of the Wizarding World. It remained unsolved till the end of the war, and nobody knew if he was even alive. If he did die during the war and his disappearance was because of his inability to return due to his death, then his untimely death was a big blow to the Order of the Phoenix. Death Eaters and Lord Voldemort killed several members of the Original Order of the Phoenix. 

During the battle, the Death Eaters killed Molly Weasley’s (née Prewett) brothers, Gideon and Fabian Prewett. Lord Voldemort killed James and Lily Potter in Godric’s Hollow before one-year-old Harry Potter subdued him. Frank and Alice Longbottom were tortured using the Cruciatus Curse by several Death Eaters and were left heavily harmed and beyond cure.

Caradoc and other members of the Order of the Phoenix became martyrs, for which coming generations of wizards and witches would remain eternally grateful. 

Mentions in the Harry Potter Series

Caradoc Dearborn is only mentioned once in the Harry Potter series. He is mentioned in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Mad-Eye Moody shows Harry Potter a photograph of the original Order of the Phoenix. Since Harry’s parents were also members of the Order, they, too, are seen in the photograph. 

Moody then explains to Harry that several witches and wizards from the Order of the Phoenix died or went missing. He also points out the picture of Caradoc and tells Harry that he went missing only six months after that photograph was taken.

War, Disappearances, and Murders

One of the saddest consequences of war is the chaos that ensues from it and the inability to properly execute justice in testing times like these. Like Caradoc Dearborn, several thousand and sometimes even millions of people are displaced from their homeland during war. Several people go missing and remain missing with no detail about their whereabouts. 

Several people who die in war and are not found are still considered missing as their loved ones hope to see them one day, and the proof of their death never reaches their homes. Disappearances during the war are a sad consequence of chaos due to instability in the efficiency of state function.
