Antonin Dolohov was considered a very powerful dark wizard. He was a major Death Eater during the First Wizarding War when Voldemort started gaining power. He, along with four other Death Eaters, murdered Fabian and Gideon Prewett, the two brothers of Molly Weasley (née Prewett). He was sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban after his capture and arrest. However, Dolohov escaped Azkaban during the mass breakout that happened in 1996 after Lord Voldemort’s return. It marked the beginning of the Second Wizarding War.

Antonin Dolohov was among the Death Eaters who fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries against Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Luna Lovegood, and Neville Longbottom. He was later captured again and sentenced to life in Azkaban, only to break out again. He and Thorfinn Rowle attacked Harry, Ron, and Hermione in a cafe at Tottenham Court Road, London, after the trio escaped the attack that took place at Bill and Fleur’s wedding. The trio defeated them easily and obliviated him, erasing his memories of the incident.

Antonin Dolohov was one of the friends of Tom Riddle waiting in Hogsmeade, mentioned by Albus Dumbledore when Tom came to ask for a teaching position at Hogwarts. The others Dumbledore mentioned by name include Rosier, Mulciber, and Nott. However, it is not certain if Dumbledore was mentioning a relative of Antonin or Antonin himself.

Early Life

Antonin Dolohov was likely born somewhere in Europe. He was likely born into a Pure-blooded family. He had dark hair. He may have attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. If he did study at Hogwarts, he was in Slytherin House. He graduated from Hogwarts and became a Death Eater for Tom Riddle, later known as Lord Voldemort. Antonin Dolohov was one of the most dangerous Death Eaters and had tortured several non-supporters of the Dark Lord, including countless Muggles.

Death Eater

Antonin Dolohov was very keen on the Dark Arts, which may have been one of the reasons that he was drawn to Tom Riddle like most of Tom Riddle’s friends and followers. Dolohov was considered a very powerful wizard and would go to great lengths to defeat his opponent in a duel. His magical abilities allowed him to cast several spells unknown to most people and caused them severe harm. He was quite skilled in conjuration, which was similar to transfiguration.

Antonin Dolohov had a reputation for torturing a lot of non-supporters of Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort started his reign with the help of his followers, known as Death Eaters, and the First Wizarding War began.

Antonin Dolohov was eventually caught and tried in the Wizengamot for the brutal murders of Gideon and Fabian Prewett. It is said that the two brothers fought bravely till the end against five Death Eaters, including Dolohov, and eventually died. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban prison for the murders of Fabian and Gideon. Harry witnessed his arrest in the Pensieve

Igor Karkaroff, another Death Eater, mentioned Antonin Dolohov’s name when asked for evidence to reduce his punishment in a meeting at the Wizengamot. However, Antonin Dolohov was already in custody, and Karkaroff’s information could have been more helpful to the Wizengamot. Karkaroff also revealed that Severus Snape was a Death Eater, but Albus Dumbledore revealed that he was one before but turned into a double agent and helped the other side later.

Breaking Out of Azkaban

Dolohov was kept in a cell in Azkaban for a long time. His cell was close to that of Bellatrix Lestrange, one of the most important and powerful Death Eaters. During the beginning of the Second Wizarding War, Antonin Dolohov broke out of Azkaban prison along with nine other Death Eaters, including Bellatrix Lestrange. He returned to Lord Voldemort, who had recently returned to his physical form.

Sirius Black was named the perpetrator of the mass breakout from Azkaban by the Ministry, but it was later revealed that the Dementors were partial to helping Lord Voldemort, and that was the cause of the breakout.

The Second Wizarding War

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Antonin Dolohov was among the Death Eaters who were present at the Department of Mysteries when Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Luna Lovegood, and Neville Longbottom came there in search of Sirius Black. Lord Voldemort used the connection between his mind and Harry’s to convince Harry that Sirius was in danger and was being kept in the Department of Mysteries.

Dolohov was the Death Eater. Hermione was seriously injured in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. His spell caused a streak with a purple flame to erupt from his wand, and Hermione fell unconscious on the ground. A duel ensued in the Hall of Prophecies, and Dolohov and Jugson found Harry, Neville, and Hermione in the Time Room and hit them with the Impediment Jinx.

When he tried to alert the other Death Eaters of their location, Hermione cast the Silencing Charm on him. He non-verbally cast an unknown spell on Hermione, seriously injuring her. He then broke Neville’s wand and nose and threatened Harry to give up. However, when Dolohov was slightly distracted, Harry put him in a Body-Binding curse.

Soon, the Order of the Phoenix members arrived, and Dolohov dueled with Alastor Moody. He cast the dancing feet spell on Neville and several other charms on Harry but was unsuccessful. He then tried to retrieve the prophecy from Harry’s hand using a charm but was unsuccessful. He finally dueled with Sirius Black and was subdued again when Harry used the Full Body-Bind curse. He was arrested and sent to Azkaban again.

The Second Escape

Antonin Dolohov escaped from Azkaban prison with several other Death Eaters. He was present at Malfoy Manor for the Death Eater meeting. He sat between Severus Snape and Corban Yaxley during the meeting. After the Death Eaters attacked those present at Bill and Fleur’s wedding, Harry, Ron, and Hermione disappeared into Tottenham Court Road in London. From there, they went to the Luchino Caffe. Since a taboo was placed on Lord Voldemort’s name, Dolohov and Thorfinn Rowle tracked the trio down to the café when one of the trio mentioned him.

However, Harry quickly noticed them, and before they could dominate the duel, Harry, Ron, and Hermione came out victorious. They then modified the memories of both Dolohov and Rowle.

The Battle of Hogwarts

Dolohov took part in the Battle of Hogwarts against the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore’s Army, the staff and students of Hogwarts. He dueled with Dean Thomas and Parvati Patil but was later subdued by a full body-binding curse cast by Parvati Patil. Later in the battle, he killed Remus Lupin, presumably with the Killing Curse.

After the day’s battle ended, the Death Eaters returned to the Forbidden Forest after Voldemort suggested that Harry surrender himself to prevent further bloodshed. Dolohov and Yaxley stood guard at the entrance of the Forbidden Forest. In the final battle that ensued, Dolohov was defeated by Filius Flitwick.

How Did Dolohov Kill Lupin?

There is no certainty about what exact spell Dolohov used to kill Remus Lupin. But the bigger question is, how could he kill a wizard as powerful as Lupin when he was unsuccessful against younger wizards and witches like Harry Potter, Parvati Patil, and Hermione Granger? Antonin Dolohov may have cast a spell at Lupin when he was not looking or incapacitated. Since Dolohov was a Dark Wizard and a Death Eater, he wouldn’t have refused to attack Lupin when incapacitated.

Dolohov likely used the Killing Curse, also known as Avada Kedavra, to kill Remus Lupin since there were no marks on Lupin’s body, and he looked very calm in death.

However, Dolohov may have used another spell that he had used once before on Hermione. It was a very strong charm and barely did any damage on the outside, but it severely injured Hermione. Since he cast the spell on Hermione non-verbally, it did not do enough damage to her. He may have used the full force of this mysterious Dark Magic spell on Lupin.

FAQs

Who kills Antonin Dolohov?

Filius Flitwick defeated Antonin Dolohov during the Battle of Hogwarts’ final battle. It is not certain if Flitwick killed Dolohov or only incapacitated him to ensure his imprisonment in Azkaban prison. Dolohov was responsible for the death of Remus Lupin and injured several other wizards and witches during the First and Second Wizarding Wars.

What did Antonin Dolohov do to Hermione?

Antonin Dolohov cast a mysterious charm which caused a purple light to erupt from his wand and attack Hermione. Since he was under the effect of a Silencing Charm, he had to cast this spell non-verbally, and its full effect may have been dampened by its non-verbal nature. Hermione felt a crumpling feeling in her body and was gravely injured by this spell.

Is Dolohov Russian?

It is very likely that Dolohov was Russian or had Russian origins. He may have also been from other East-European countries near Russia. His name does not have an English origin, so it is possible that Dolohov’s parents or other ancestors had Russian origins. However, Dolohov studied at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and may have been friends with Tom Riddle at Hogwarts, so he did not grow up in Russia.
